I can't help but wonder, if not for Ward testing Simpson's new restraint
system we might be dealing with another tragedy...

looks like it, he ripped the muscles in the base of his neck, if he didnt
wear the device his spine wouldve gone as well.

TIME TO LOOK AT SOFT NASCARs, CHANGE THE POINTS SYSTEM where broken cars
NEED to finish.

crumple zones are better than Rigid chassis.

The problem is, car that crumples easier, won't in most cases be able to
finish.  I agree that the cars NEED to become less rigid, but in doing so,
there will be less that a crew can do to fix the car enough to get it back out
on the track safely.

And personally I'd like to see Nascar go to a more F1 styled points system,
where they only pay points to the top 20 or so cars.  I think that the actual
points chase in Nascar has gotten a bit stale of late.  Just my opinion though.

That is a good idea about the points--it could even be the top 30, but
having these wrecks driving around in the way of people trying to race
because they are collecting points for each lap is ridiculous.  If the cars
were harder to repair, so be it...everyone would have to move to cleaner
racing.

Points are awarded for position, not for laps completed.  A driver
will often retire when there are no more points in sight.

The other incentive is TV coverage.  Driver rides around, gets out of
the way of the leaders, D.W. says something like, "That's the
gentlemanly thing to do--smart racin'."

The obstacle to crumple zones is the cost of getting ready for next
week, not the effort of getting back in the race.
