Underperforiming system ?

by Olav K. Malm » Wed, 18 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario 5296 with a PIII 450, 128 MB ram and a CL Voodoo2. I got
the system as a home-pc deal with my employer, so thats the reason it's a Compaq,
I had to take it or leave it.

In Grand Prix Legends 1.1 I have to turn off some details to get solid 36-37 in
800x600 in Training mode at Spa. If I try to race the framerate drops to about 20
and do not reach 36 hardly at all, but is about 30 to 33. I can't remeber how 1.0
performed, but I could always make a 1.0 install too. Haven't tried without FF
either. (Hmm, a bit embarrasin to be so researchless, but I can't really play
GPL again without FF). I've seen reports of solid 36 in 300-350 Mhz systems so I
still wonder.

In GP2, with everything on in SVGA, i have about 80-90 % occupancy with maximum
framerate (26 ?).

Sportscar GT is a dog at 800x600, everything on 2nd lowest, and without FF. Las
Vegas is pretty impossible.

I don't get more that 30-35 fps in C:PR eiter.

Do some of you other guys or girls get similar results with the same cpu and 3d-
accelerator ?

Don't think your system is underperforming Olav. I got a nearly identical
machine (no-name though) and I too have to turn off stuff in 800x600.
Off-line, I race with nearly everything on in 640x480 (I turn some stuff off
in the mirrors to make them less distracting) with 19AI, getting around
34fps on average and around 26fps at starts. On-line I drop even more stuff,
just to make sure of solid 36fps.

Haven't tried any of the others on this machine, so I can't comment.

Have you turned Vsync off in the voodoo II properties?
I have a PII 450 with Voodoo 2 SLI (= 2 voodoo2 cards). I allways have
36 fps in 1024 resolution, except at the start of a race with a full
field. As soon as the race starts, the fps goes up to 36 again.

I have detail bias set to 40. If I set this to 100 my fps drops
considerably.
You should definately get 36 fps with your system.

Underperforiming system ?

Something's not kosher here.  I was getting better results with my old 300A, even in
non-overclocked mode, for both GPL & SCGT.  I suspect there may be a lot of stuff
running in the background, using up valuable system resources.  Have you done a
Ctl-Alt-Del & closed down all but Explorer and Systray?  My resources this way are
97% free, and it performs well for ***.  Good Luck.

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!
