I saw a crash today on Eurosport From Geoff Bodine from somewhere mid
September in a Craftsman truck at Daytona. Geez what an impact... One of the
most horrific accidents I ever saw in Nascar.
It was only a flashback so they didn't pay much attention to it.
What where his injuries and where there injured spectators?

It was this February at Daytona - the Truck race was the Friday before the
Daytona 500 I think - I saw that wreck live, which was REAL scary as you can
imagine.  It was somewhat assumed that he was dead after seeing that, gladly
we were wrong about that.  In watching NASCAR for most of my 33 years, I'd
have to say that's probably the worst wreck I've seen, with the possible
exception of Michael Waltrip at Bristol where his car hit the inside
retaining wall and disintegrated, going from 130mph to 0 instantaneously.

Bodine had some burns and broken bones, enough to lay him up for 10 weeks -
but was racing the last few weeks, running really well at Richmond this past
week after failing to qualify for the California race.  Nine fans were
injured, none severely - minor cuts mainly from debris.  The race was
red-flagged for several hours as they had to fix the catch fencing, which
was pretty well destroyed.  Somewhat miraculous that with the force of
impact and the fireball that ensued that everyone came out as well as they
did.

It was during Speedweeks at Daytona in February.  Very first time the
Craftsman trucks raced there.  Geoff returned to his Cup ride just
this past Saturday night in Richmond, ***ia, but had to be relieved
part way through the race by his younger brother.  Aquitted himself
quite well after such a wreck and relatively long absence by
qualifying 4th for the race, though.

There were some minor spectator injuries.  One good laceration and, I
think, a broken arm.  Geoff had some fractured vertebrae, a
concussion, some minor burns (not to minimize, that hurts like hell,
but only a small area) and a world of various aches and pains that
would result from emulating a human pinball at 180+ MPH.

Check out www.nascar.com and see what stories they may have in their
news archives.  They covered it quite thoroughly, including followup
interviews with him.  There should also be archived news and,
possibly, a video clip of the wreck at www.espn.com.

I don't know if it was much more horrific than Richard Petty's 12+
barrel rolls down the front straight years back, because the
television coverage is so much more thorough now than then, but it
sure seemed worse.

In an interview he did for RPM tonight from the hospital afterwards
he said that he must have died for a brief period of time on the track
as he saw his father. Geoffrey stated that his father told him he
loved him and it was good to see him again but it wasn't his time yet.
Said he woke up at that point still in the car on the track.  Too
Close.

I've seen one video of MW's wreck at Bristol.  That was incredible
that he walked away from it.  I'm curious as to your estimate of his
speed though.  I'd thought they went through the corners there at
about 100 or so in todays cars.  If I'm  not mistaken he was in the
middle of a corner on the outside when his car took off.  Am I
incorrect about any of this?

He was going 180 when it happened

That wreck happened at Bristol Motor Speedway, if I'm not mistaken.  I
don't think anyone has ever gone anywhere near 180mph at Bristol Motor
Speedway.  It's only a 1/2 mile track you know.

Michael's crash wasn't so fast, but he stopped in a hurry. If I remember
that is what caused all the damage. He hit an opening in the fence, or a
gate in the fence. Happens at my local short track once a year, you hit that
gate just right, all forward momemtum stops and the car is toast.

That would explain it.  Guess I wasn't descriptive enough to state
that I was still talking about MW's wreck at Bristol.  Thanks for
clearing that up for me.

He shot out to the outside wall and pushed an access gate out of the
way and went head on into the concrete wall that he gate was on.  Went
from about 90-100(?) to 0 in about 6".  He said that everything broke
lose, motor, body panels, everything but the seat.  No idea how that
held.  I think it was the added strength of the restraint system that
held that in place.  Good thing too.  I have some pics I'll try and
post in alt.binaries.simulators but based on my last attempt to post
there don't hold your breath. :-)
