I'm wondering if there needs to be a port open when logging on to a N4
server with a boss password, from behind a firewall. I've opened the usual
ports needed for hosting from behind a firewall.

I can log in fine and skip sessions, but when I end the race and want to go
to the setup screen the game boots me back to the lobby.

If you are trying this and it isn't working right, I can't tell anything
else to try.
