IndyCar Racing: hard time with road tracks ?

by Dilhuydy Hu » Sun, 11 Dec 1994 15:44:42

Hi,

After a few month of training on ovals I am now able to get the pole and to
win some races (except in Nazareth...). Particularly in Michigan where I set
impressive records ( > 230 mph ) using the ACE settings.

I am now training on raod tracks (concentrating first on Long Beach) still
with the ACE settings. It looks I can not do better than 1'05"which is very
far from the pole... I do not understand why I am getting so different results
using the ACE settings ? Does anyone have a similar experience or suggestion ?
(I am using AUTO SHIFTING and AUTO BRAKING)

Hi,

I just downloaded the NASCAR demo from Papyrus ftp site

When I try to run it I get the error message :

"Unable to load ROL(1). Incomplete installation ?"

Any hint about this ? (I can't wait to see that demo...)

Keep auto-shifting ON (I still use it!). But turn off auto-braking. Also,
I found the the FAST setup will really give reasonable results against
100% opponants. Then the secret to road courses, is not stopping. It is better
to go slow & smooth, than lightning fast/hit_the_wall/stop/start again.
Also, until you get used to the tracks, slow down way before you think
you need to in the corners. In time you will learn the track. Compared
to World Circut, the IRC tracks are VERY easy to memorize. They are
also harder to drive :-)

Yep, ovals are easy. No braking.

Ok, to get a decent time, you really have to ditch the auto-braking,
especially at longbeach. With the ace setup, I think I have done a 56 sec lap,
with a custome setup my record is 54.924 I think. Are you using a joystick? If
so, steer with left-right, use one button for accel, one for brakes.

It will take a while to work out the braking points, but once you do, you'll
enjoy the game more anyway.

I'd advise differently.  I use 2 Joysticks.  One for Steering, reverse,
and Gear-Shifting, and another for Acceleration and Braking.  I find that this
set-up works and gives me times in the 58.xx at Long Beach.  I don't have the
$$$ for even a cheap Steering wheel (I am at college and ALL of my money is
in the hands of the bookstore!)

Well, you are probably interested in my joystick configuration:

I use the stick for steering and acceleration/brake, and the buttons for gear-shifting.
(reverse is somewhere on the keyboard...)
Take a look at the 'fast lap list' - it's definitely not a handicap :)

Check contents of .zip archive:-> you see a directory structure
but pkunzip doesn't create this from this archive
        use pkunzip -d
                     ^
restores directory structure of .zip archive

        (or do it manually)
