F1 Racing Simulation

by Damian Magui » Mon, 22 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I have just purchased F1 Racing Simulation and am unable to get it
working.

I have a Gateway 2000 Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM and an integrated 2MB
ATI Mach 3d graphics card.

Initially the game would go through the initial options screens i.e.
selecting drivers, tracks etc. and would begin to load the track
selected and then the screen would go blank and the cursor would be at
the hourglass  shape and it just hangs then. I have tried the drivers
for ATI Mach, ATI RAge/Rage II and ATI Expression as suggested at the
Microsoft DirectX pages.

Using some of the above drivers I have got to a similar stage with the
exception that when the screen goes blank I get the following error
message:

D3D ERROR REPORT

DirectDraw does not have enough memory to perform the operation

In :DirectDraw->CreateSurface[&ddsd, &[_this->DeviceSurface],NULL]

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might get the game
working ?

Do I need to get a new graphics controller such as a 3dFX card ?

According to FAQ on Unofficial F1 Sim site, you need at least 4mb card
for use of D3D. I use a 3dfx.

I tried the Demo on my 133, 64 meg ram, Intergraph intense 3d Rendition
Verite Card, and had the same message.
At the time I had my screen Resolution at 1024 x768, so I tried to conserve
memory by reducing my standard windows size to 640x 480 and I retried the
Demo.   Under those settings, I was able to run the demo on a 2 meg video
card and d3d.  I won't have the full version until Monday, so I can't say if
it will work on the full version.

Try buying a 3dfx card or one with at least 4mb onboard. I'm sure I
read somewhere that it needs a 4mb card capable of D3D.

They conveniently forgot to tell you on the box that you need 4 megs
on the graphics card. :(

It's mentioned you need 4 Meg video card and capable of displaying 640x480
65000 colors, in the
requirement for the game outside the box.

Per the box:

Minimum:
Pentium 120, Direct 3D compatible card - 16 MB RAM, SVGA (640x480
Pixel, 65000 Colours)

No mention of 4 megs. I'm unimpressed with Ubisofts attitude.

I have now got the game working after purchasing an Apocalypse 3D card
with 4MB memory.

you need a direct 3d card (3dfx is better)
ati products are not d3d
look to rec.autos.simulators and you getting more infos bout that fact

ATI products are Direct3D compatible,  I have an ati all in wonder,  and F1RS
plays just fine.
