OT: What happened to Bob Varsha?

by James Lars » Mon, 13 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Two years ago Bob Varsha was the lead announcer for ABC television in the U.S.
for CART racing.  Last year he seemed to disappear.  Now this year he is
working for Speedvision, doing features and last night, F1

I wouldn't suspect moving from ABC to Speedvision was by design.

Just interested.  Anybody know?

Thanks

Bob is doing the F1 broadcasts on Speedvision with Hobbs and Posey :) I
for one am glad he's back. He adds a great touch.

Bob did F-1 races back in the early eighties too.

I think Stiff meant "late eighties to early nineties"................

Personally, I'm very happy to have Varsha and Hobbs back together - they are
my alltime favorite F1 commentary team.  Just wish I could get Speedvision
at the place I'm moving to in a couple weeks.  Ah well, at least FSNE is
showing the races this year.

As for what happened to Varsha, it's pretty simple - when ABC and ESPN
merged, ABC already had their IRL commentators under contract, so it made
(fiscal, but certainly not quality) sense to just use the same guys for
CART.  Varsha was kept on as a commentator for other sports for a while.

Varsha's an interesting case - he wasn't a racing guy when he started,
that's just where he ended up, and it's to his credit that he did his
homework and became a really good, professional racing commentator.  I read
an article a few years ago that talked about his interest in doing other
sports.  Funny thing is, it seems he got his chance at ABC/ESPN, and decided
he preferred auto racing after all.  Good man................

Nope I got a videos of Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux doing battle in
1982 (yes the famous one) in the French GP and good old Bob Varsha is doing
the call.........

Since ABC lost the IRL coverage to Fox last year, ABC moved Porky Page
over to do the CART races.  Sullivan and Tommy Kendall laughed at what
they were offered to return, so that brought Gilligan (Parker Johnstone)
into the fray.  I believe Kendall responded to ABC's offer with
something along the lines of "No thanks, I have enough hobbies
already..." ;-)

Bob was calling the F1 race on Speedvision with David Hobbs.
I believe that they said he was returning after being away
for 7 years.
