That's just the way it works. The graphics you see in the rearview mirror are
the cars' base colors. When in the paintkit, you have to option to go to the
Paintshop. This is where you can set the color of the individual panels of
the car that are seen under the decals. It is possible to customize these
colors so that individual cars can be distinguished in the rearview mirror,
although sometimes it can be tough.

As I know, those 3D accelerated version of nascar should have full detail
in the rear mirror. Remember the game is designed when the most powerful
machine is probably a Pentium 90.
