A Brief History of (My Racing) Time

by elrik » Wed, 07 Aug 2002 08:37:16

With apologies to S. H.

Since taking up sim racing my limited funds (and time)  have been
disappearing as if into a black hole.

Day 1:   Bought NR2002

Day 2:   Bought a Thrustmaster 360 Modena non FF wheel  (hand controls
needed). (Time starts to fly here)

Day 9:   Bought GPL & F1 2001 (EA).   (time starts whizzing bye here)

Day 10: Install FIA Mod for F1 2001.

Day 14: Broke accelerator paddle on wheel.  (time comes to a crawl)

Days 14-36:  <snipped> Much bordom and missed RASCAR races

Day 36: Received new Thrustmaster replacement wheel.

Days 37-42:  Fun has been restored to the universe.  (time speeds up once
again)

Day 42: Broke accelerator paddle on new wheel.  (time grinds to a halt; in
fact it seems as if I've actually gone back in time)

Day 62: No replacement wheel in site, bought Logitech twin analog rumble
(FF) pad (again need the hand controls) to see if it works very well or not.
Gotta be better then a keyboard.

Day 63:  Found out that I can drive reasonably well with the pad in GPL and
F1 2001 but not so well in NR2002.  The constant left pull is difficult to
consistantly overcome and control on long straights.

Day 64: Notice I'm having more fun in GPL because of the improved feel of
the FF. (however primative it may be)

Day 65: Notice that the new Logitech Software I needed to download for the
FF pad to work in Win XP now supports (unofficially) the functions of the
"Driving Force" wheel (designed for the PlayStation 2) .  It has hand
controlled analog paddles.     Hm-m-m-m .  .  .

Day 80: Recieved new(est) Thrustmaster replacement wheel.

Day 82: Notice that I'm still using the pad because it is more fun and
besides it is only a matter of time before the damn wheel breaks again.

Day 83: Decide to get that PS2 Logitech FF wheel.

Day 83: What the heck, decide to get a PS2 so I can see what the deal with
"Gran Turismo 3" is.  (money is heading into the black hole at an alarming
rate now!!!)

Day 83 Get GT3  (and my 15 year old son decides that for some reason or
other he is entitled to some BMX and Blader games as well.    Well Duh!)

Day 83: Install new FF wheel on PC.  Works with all games so far but quite
the learning experience as I'm being yanked hither and yon.

Day 84:  Check out GT3 with normal sony ps2 controller.

Day 84:  Try GT3 with the new wheel.   FUN . . . FUN . . . FUN.

OK so I have to much time on my hands.  But I have to get back to working on
my YASOMTA GPL project. (still 5 secs away on both tracks but hope springs
eternal.) and have got to get much faster cars in GT3.  Much racing to do
and if I ever sort out the FF stuff I'll be back in RASCAR too.

PS does anyone know if there are 6-8 foot extension cables for USB devices.
It is a bit tricky to switch the wheel between the PC and the PS2 because of
their locations and my mobility problems

Also, if anyone has some info on the arcane science adjusting the FF on the
wheel for the various racing sims out there (especially NR2002, GPL and F1
2001-2) it would be much appreciated.  I have read the posts here lately and
checked out the sites that they pointed to but still FF settings are . . .
well magical to me.
