Your favorite kind of corner?

For me, I am best at (and most enjoy) "compound" corners,
such as Eau Rouge (T1 Spa) and Maison Blanche (last
turn Le Mans).  It is more of an intutive feel sort of thing
rather than pure technique: I actually beat Achim out of

Kind of satisfying to load up speedtrack on Replay
Analyser, and see that short section of track which is
"green" (he of course slaughters me everywhere else-all
that red bleeding all over the track...).  I also love the Masta
Kink-gotta respect that lurking monster!

But just give me a typical generic left or right, and I am
simultaneously bored, slow, and frustrated, tho I am
learning to use throttle w/ the brake, which is helping.
I'd like to see more compound corners in the addon
tracks (Leipzig has some of those-tight little esses
in very quick succession).

I do better at the tracks that have short, 'sweeping' corners.  Zeltweg,
Zandvoort, etc.  Since I can't seem to get good exit speeds on sharp corners, I
get KILLED on tracks that feature a lot of those - Monaco, Norisring, Salsburg
74.

However, if the sweepers are too long, I can't mantain the speed that others
seem to keep.  Think Stavelot at Spa - I lose a TON of time there, and don't
know how to fix that.

Personally I like variety rather than just certain types of corners. I
think I know the section you mean at the 'ring, with the hedges. Every
time I go through at speed I feel it willing me to keep it in 3rd to the
first bridge, but you need to be inch perfect & use all the road to do
it. Very satisfying to get right hot-lapping, and a big relief when you
get through it in a race ;-)

>Best corner

Imagine you practiced 4 weeks to get a good result in the deciding
race of your league. Twenty hotheads are revving the engine and
turning the front wheels waiting for the startflag to drop.

You're placed  8th on the grid. No Shift R, a full GP length race.
Your thoughts are wandering off. The first turn. Curve Grande. Oh my.
Will I survive? Nothing beats Turn 1 at Monza....

Exactly the same for me. I do better on the tracks full of sequences
of shallow 3D corners. Good examples are sections of the 'Ring between
Bergwerk and the back straight (well, actually most of the track too),
first 13-15 km at Janakkala, first half of Sachsenring.

The esses at Watkins Glen.  Really any turn that has to be taken flat
in order to get a respectable laptime, but where taking the corner
flat often results in chaos.  The kink in Masta, Dunlop at Le Mans.
Both kinks on the front straight of the mid 90's Vancouver are
interesting (the one that's flat, and the one that you hit at nearly
top speed and have to slow down/turn simultaneously).  Turns 1, 2, and
the run down to Moss at Gripsport can be interesting.  Pretty much
every turn at Zandy except for Tarzan.  The fast sweepers at the
beginning of Rouen and the flat out right hander at the top of the
hill.  The chicane at Monaco.

The only time I can stand a slow corner is if it comes after a VMax
moment or is descending in radius.  The hairpin at Magny Cours is a
great place to mow the lawn.  Turn 1 at Mexico is tricky and feels
awesome when you take it reasonably quickly.

Come to think of it, I think the only 4 corners I truly loathe are at
Talladega.

Variante Ascari at Monza I think is the best turn in GPL. If you stay in the
groove you can pin the pedal to the floor and skate through that corner
defying the laws of physics. I think I lose all track of time in that turn.
My house could be burning down and I'd have to finish that corner first. ;-)

I have problems with mid-speed corners, especially longish mid-speed
corners.

I end up either approaching them like low speed or high speed corners, and
lose a bunch of time either way.

My best corners are the one's you don't have to brake for :)

My biggest challange at Lemans (short of not flying off the track, of
course) was at the kink on the long straight.  With the setup we were using,
with no draft, the speed was 215.  I'm sure everyone was the same.

My challange was getting through there without seeing it drop to 214.  I
managed to do it a couple of times, but it's real hard.

Interesting thread.

I don't know that I have a favorite type of corner, but off the top of my
head, some great sections (in addition to the ones you already mentioned):

- The esses at Watkins Glen
- The whole ***y lap at Zandvoort

About halfway up the 67 gpl hill at Zandvoort, if you have FF, then it can be magic
as the car twitches right to left to right and the climb up to the stone bridge.
That is a cool section...WHEN I get it right.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Road Atlanta....T1 thru T5.....that
slight T1 dip, then uphill, those great downhill esses, that superb T4,
ending in that short, fast T5 sweeper....great when you get it right.....bb
