N2: Making human racers more equal

I haven't been following this newsgroup for a while, so I don't know
if this has been asked / answered before.

I'm wondering if there is a way to make two unequal racers more
equal when racing via modem in N2.  My friend is less experienced than I
am, so I usually pass him easily and pull away quickly.  Then, it's not
that fun for either of us.  (We want to be able to race each other.  If
we wanted to race only the AI cars, then we wouldn't be in multiplayer
to begin with...)  I'm looking for ideas about how to make my car a
little worse than his, or something like that.  We both have
Thrustmaster T2's, if that helps.  I thought of restricting how far my
gas pedal can be pressed... any other ideas out there?

Thanks!

Run a low, low 4th gear in yours.

Ive never done this but how about you each test separately at each track
your going to race and keep the times, and whatever difference there is in
time, allow your friend that much head start.

Thats going to be hard to do since you have more experience than he
does. He still needs to learn the tracks in order to keep up with you no
matter how you adjust the cars. Play with the gearing(make numbers
lower) and spoilers(make them higher) on your car then his to make your
car slower. Even with a slower car you may still beat him.

Try altering your setup's 4th gear ratio so that  your top speed is
slower...

That's good news -- I'm hoping to beat him "with a slower car"!  Thanks for
the ideas, everyone, especially the one about changing the 4th gear ratio.  I
experimented with that idea last night, and it is a very effective way of making
my lap times a little longer.

Thanks,

Better still, (except at Dega of course <g>) *lower* your spoiler
compared to his. That's the real life way of adjusting the cars' relative
performance <g>

Hello Steve

One way I can think of is to put the restrictor plate on for
all the tracks on your system only. This will not work for
Talladega as the restrictor plate is on already.
But for the other tracks putting the restrictor plate on will
lower the horsepower from your engine.

To do this you need to open the track TXT file for any given
track (eg ATLANTA.TXT in the Atlanta folder) and find the line
that reads "SPDWY 0 47 53"  (or what ever numbers for the
particular track) and change the 0 to a 1.

0 = No restrictor plate fitted
1 = Restrictor plate fitted.

Just in case you are not sure, the restrictor plate is a
aluminum plate fitted between the carburator and inlet
manifold on the Winston Cup engines. It reduces the amount of
fuel to the engine and thus reducing it's power output in
order to slow down the cars. To my knowledge Talladega is the
only track that requires the restrictor plate.

Hope this helps (and works for that matter.)

Feel free to ask if you need more help.

Nigel

Daytona also uses the plates. And to be perfectly cause-and-effect
correct, the plate restricts the amount of air that can flow into the
engine, thus restricting the fuel that is mixed with that air... (You
weren't wrong, just glossed over a step.)

Damn it Jim, I shouldn't say this, but...  I believe that when he said
that "Talladega is the only track", he was referring to the sim package,
not the "real" package.  I had just about gotten over the fact that we
may never have Daytona in our "sim" package and you had to go and pick
at an old wound.  Thanks alot! <G>

While I am handing out blame...  Thanks NASCAR & CBS for bringing once
again to my attention that Daytona is missing from my favorite NASCAR
sim, by running this event yet again!  Join the anti-Sega boycott and
refuse to run events at this track until we get Daytona for NASCAR2!

On the original subject, here's a method of balancing that
struck me recently, from my experience in competing in
air combat games:

The great driver can turn off his sound! ;)

He'll be back where the newbie is, not sure how far to
push it in the corners. One thing I found though (in air games)
is you can still regain alot of your competiveness, as you find
all the other feedback you might have been ignoring in favor of the
obvious aural feedback.  Might even improve one's normal
sim driving! :)
