I'm very pleased for you, but I cannot re-create what you say (doh!). I have a similar
(P100, 16mb, 2mb DRAM) to you but cannot run NASCAR in anything like high
detail in SVGA and maintain a usable frame rate. I used the standard SVGA
test (only test) in NASCAR - switch everything on except set the grandstand
to AUTO, set the min and max rates 1 frame apart and keep reducing until the
grandstand flashes on and off when parked - then start fiddling with your
setup, if grandstand stays on you have a better frame rate, off it is worse.
There is absolutely no difference on my machine with or without EMS.
Further to this, numerous people with a better knowledge than I have posted that EMS
actually slows games down - again I have no evidence of this tho (EMM386 has always
seemed a bit unstable in use anyway).
Anyway, what I'd ask to readers of this thread is to post what they consider to
be a usable frame rate for serious racing (not sightseeing) in SVGA at three tracks.
Bristol, Atlanta and Talledega. The rate should vary as the joystick at Bristol needs
to be adjusted faster than at Talledega because of the tight turns, you can only
adjust your input to the program as fast as the frame rate runs. Agreed ???
I suggest the following rates, Bristol 17+ fps, Talledega 13-14fps and Atlanta
somewhere in between. This means in SVGA turning most of the textures off. Also,
how many cars do people like to draw? Unless I can see 15-20 ahead I don't feel
as though I am racing.
Interested to hear how other people race, all this talk of frame rates and
graphic settings is relative to your driving style. I must confess when the
track pack appears here in Blighty and I start a full season I'll probably go
for VGA with all opponents and 20-25 fps simply to make the driving easier.
Sorry to have gone on but we all should start commenting about our machines
in the context they are used.
