hi folks!

try running Nascar with EMS in your Config.Sys. You will be surprised.
It runs (frame-rate) about 30-50% faster.
I have a P90, 8Mb, 2MB Dram S3-864, i had to turn off asphalt, wall
texture, grass texture to run it smoothly. With EMS, I run it with just
asphalt off, and it runs smoothly. That's a surprise i like! Check it
out!

no kidding!

What exactly did you put in your config.sys to add EMS?  I'd like to give your
idea a try. Thanks.

oops. wrong. just put emm386 in it. even if it sounds contradictory, it
works! The thing that software companies suggest their consumer to use
their bootsys that rarely implement emm386 is a pitty. in many games,
emm386 really boosts up speed.

Hi all,
The subject says it all. I need some setup tips for Sears Point. I
can run a solid 83 mph with the ace setup, but that wont cut it in a
race with my opponents at 100% (my goal on all tracks). I just don't
know where to start. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm very pleased for you, but I cannot re-create what you say (doh!). I have a similar
(P100, 16mb, 2mb DRAM) to you but cannot run NASCAR in anything like high
detail in SVGA and maintain a usable frame rate. I used the standard SVGA
test (only test) in NASCAR - switch everything on except set the grandstand
to AUTO, set the min and max rates 1 frame apart and keep reducing until the
grandstand flashes on and off when parked - then start fiddling with your
setup, if grandstand stays on you have a better frame rate, off it is worse.
There is absolutely no difference on my machine with or without EMS.

Further to this, numerous people with a better knowledge than I have posted that EMS
actually slows games down - again I have no evidence of this tho (EMM386 has always
seemed a bit unstable in use anyway).

Anyway, what I'd ask to readers of this thread is to post what they consider to
be a  usable frame rate for serious racing (not sightseeing) in SVGA at three tracks.
Bristol, Atlanta and Talledega. The rate should vary as the joystick at Bristol needs
to be adjusted faster than at Talledega because of the tight turns, you can only
adjust your input to the program as fast as the frame rate runs. Agreed ???

I suggest the following rates, Bristol 17+ fps, Talledega 13-14fps and Atlanta
somewhere in between. This means in SVGA turning most of the textures off. Also,
how many cars do people like to draw? Unless I can see 15-20 ahead I don't feel
as though I am racing.

Interested to hear how other people race, all this talk of frame rates and
graphic settings is relative to your driving style. I must confess when the
track pack appears here in Blighty and I start a full season I'll probably go
for VGA with all opponents and 20-25 fps simply to make the driving easier.

Sorry to have gone on but we all should start commenting about our machines
in the context they are used.

Would you mind letting us see what your autoexec looks like (and perhaps
the config)?  I'm ALWAYS interested in gaining fps!

>hi Gary,

I'm sorry it didn't worked for you. I'm not a soft/hardware specialist
too, but the EMM386 DOES speed up Nascar on my system. How explain?

If you got FS5.1, try running it with & without EMM386 (7168Ram). At the
beginning (Chigaco Meigs), type 4 times Shift+Y (Z for Qwerty), you'll
get a frame-rate up left of the screen. 4.5fps without, 7.4fps with
EMM386. how explain?

That's no help, i know.

What do I need to add to make it active?

Thanks

It's pretty easy to explain.  FS51 uses EMS to provide more memory for the
program to use.  Nascar uses DOS4GW which converts EMS, XMS or raw extended
memory into one chunk for the program to use.  DOS4GW contains a memory
manager for the program that is using it, so you don't need EMS or XMS.
FS51 is still living in the dark ages by relying on EMS.

I do not know if Nascar is a protected mode game or not. Usually you
see DOS4/GW or a colored line on the top of the screen at the
beginning.  You should not use EMM or other memory managers with
protected mode games since they will slow them down as the DOS4/GW
is a memory manager and they conflict.  In running Doom and Terminal
Velocity it is very apparent this is true.  Now it could be that your
EMS line is shadowing a bios allowing whatever device to run faster.
