As a ***-age smoker and underrage drinker, I would like to say that I
honestly don't care one way or the other about the ban of
cigarettes/*** from sporting events. However, there are a few
points that I would like to see people consider (from both sides):
1. Winston cigarettes are manufactured by RJR-Nabisco correct?? This
is a HUGE corporation, which owns many businesses that are not related
to ***/tobacco. Since it's a corporation, all of the assets of
the individual businesses are considered assets of the corp.; to make
a long story short, it shouldn't be all that difficult for RJR-N to
advertise a different product instead of tobacco/*** -- for
example, the drivers could race for the Nabisco Cup (I realize that it
doesn't sound the same, of course, but if you think about it, it
doesn't sound any more absurd than naming the Cup after any other
product).
2. As far as teams being unable to compete without tobacco/***
sponsors, well, I have a ? for you all...name 1 ***ic beverage
that has EVER appeared on one of Richard Petty's cars (anwer: none).
3. Final point: RJR and other tobacco corpomonsters continuously say
things like "our adverti***ts aren't meant to lure people into
smoking." OK, that makes sense. Why else would a company advertise?
Because they feel that they're contributing to society? Ha...
Sorry if this ruffles anyone's feathers. I honestly brought these
points up to add facts (?) to these great discussions that we've been
having in regards to this proposed ban on cigarettes.
Oh, yeah...
4. My personal reactions to the "Let NASCAR make the rules rather than
the FDA" t-shirts: So, basically what you're trying to say is that a
group of individuals who stand to make money from the involvement of
tobacco in motorsports should make decisions regarding that
involvement rather than an objective federal administration which has
nothing to gain or lose either way. I guess this point could be
argued (I hope it is), but this is my personal reaction to that way of
thinking.
R.A.S. is great - i've been reading it for months...thanks a bundle to
