IWCCCARS: Searching for new server

by Tony Joh » Thu, 26 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Ladies and gents,

I hope everyone is having a good Christmas season and holiday week.
I'm writing to you to update you on what's going on with IWCCCARS.

First of all, the big question a lot of people are asking is why can't
some of you unpack the distribution archives.  That was all my fault.
I packaged the files in 32-bit archives.  The logic behind this is
that Win95 will be required for NRO (or has that changed?), and so
most of the die-hard racers would already have it installed.  Either
that, or most people using Win 3.1 will have been forced by other
software to install Win32s.  It was a judgement call.  For those who
want to upgrade to Win 3.1 32-bit, I recommend downloading Win32s from
Microsoft.

Second -- you may remember a few weeks ago that I said that I might be
needing a new server for IWCCCARS.  This has recently been confirmed
-- IWCCCARS needs a new server.  The reason for this is the fact that
I have recently gotten a new job that will preclude me having anything
to do with IWCCCARS.  So, whoever I get for the new IWCCCARS
coordinator will need a place to put the site and car files.  All
told, the site requires about 10-15MB of space and a LOT of bandwidth
(recent tallies point to about 10,000 hits a week on the page, as well
as several gigs of FTP downloads).  As a Christmas present to me,
please let me know if you have a server that can handle such a load.

SimRacing Online should not be affected by this switch -- however,
funds are still draining away rapidly, so I'm desperately looking
either for a cheaper Web hosting alternative or some sort of site
sponsorship.  Suffice to say, January will be a hectic month, since I
have all this, plus the difficulty of relocating my family to Boston
within the month.  So if I'm not very forthcoming with e-mail replies
or whatnot, please understand that I'm VERY busy! <G>

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Tony, congratulations on the new job! Relocating to Boston
must mean that Papy will never quite be the same! :-)

Best Wishes for the New Year!

Pete

Been reading your posts latelyand think I've got it figured out.  I've
seen your name in the Nascar 2 manual under credits.  Your job is causing
you to leave IWCCCARS.  You are relocating to Boston.

You have been hired as a designer for Papyrus?  The job of a lifetime.

If this is true Tony,  good luck to you and if it has already been figured
out by someone else and I am just wasting bandwidth,  sorry.  I wish I
could help with the server and web site stuff but down here on Cape Cod,
we're lucky to even be able to get onto the net.

Congratulations, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year  and good luck with
Papyrus

If Tony will be working for Papyrus, maybe Sierra's page would put up the
web space for IWCCCARS.

Just a wild idea.

The problem would be the fact that IWCCCARS does things like
"Budweiser" cars, and cars not licensed by Papyrus.  Can't do that.
It has to be "3rd party" and non-associated.

Uh, not likely. The whole reason we didn't ship some of the cars that
IWCCCARS has is licensing. (Either the drivers/teams didn't want to be
included, or the primary sponsors were ***/tobacco companies and
didn't want to change for our game.)

Since we couldn't ship them with the game, we certainly can't ship
them outside the game.

sent shooting through ***space:

Exactly.  I think the only reasons IWCCCARS isn't being sued within an
inch of its life is that a) there's no charge or profit from it and b)
it gives a whole bunch of free publicity to the sponsors.  But the
potential legal problems of an employee of Papyrus/Sierra producing
these cars make it completely impossible for me to continue with the
site.

Not to worry -- I am hard at work trying to find a new server and
coordinator so that IWCCCARS will keep on keepin' on! <G>
