Ladies and gents,
I hope everyone is having a good Christmas season and holiday week.
I'm writing to you to update you on what's going on with IWCCCARS.
First of all, the big question a lot of people are asking is why can't
some of you unpack the distribution archives. That was all my fault.
I packaged the files in 32-bit archives. The logic behind this is
that Win95 will be required for NRO (or has that changed?), and so
most of the die-hard racers would already have it installed. Either
that, or most people using Win 3.1 will have been forced by other
software to install Win32s. It was a judgement call. For those who
want to upgrade to Win 3.1 32-bit, I recommend downloading Win32s from
Microsoft.
Second -- you may remember a few weeks ago that I said that I might be
needing a new server for IWCCCARS. This has recently been confirmed
-- IWCCCARS needs a new server. The reason for this is the fact that
I have recently gotten a new job that will preclude me having anything
to do with IWCCCARS. So, whoever I get for the new IWCCCARS
coordinator will need a place to put the site and car files. All
told, the site requires about 10-15MB of space and a LOT of bandwidth
(recent tallies point to about 10,000 hits a week on the page, as well
as several gigs of FTP downloads). As a Christmas present to me,
please let me know if you have a server that can handle such a load.
SimRacing Online should not be affected by this switch -- however,
funds are still draining away rapidly, so I'm desperately looking
either for a cheaper Web hosting alternative or some sort of site
sponsorship. Suffice to say, January will be a hectic month, since I
have all this, plus the difficulty of relocating my family to Boston
within the month. So if I'm not very forthcoming with e-mail replies
or whatnot, please understand that I'm VERY busy! <G>
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
