If a real NASCAR racer starts to spin or slide, the tendency of the car
to flip or roll is very high. These little doors (Brain-fade! forgot the
exact tech-name) pop open and act as baffles, drastically reducing the
airflow over the car, creating drag and downforce, slowing the car down.
But these doors only pop open once a car has spun and is facing the
oppposite direction as the track.

These little doors are one of the most effective safety enhancements
recently added to Winston Cup Racing.

Yes,when the car is speeding backwards it tends to get light and
airborne.  The flaps help suck the car down and sometimes prevent upside
down manuevers.  Some drivers like Wallace and Earnhardt are able to
find workarounds.  Maybe that is why they are so great :^)

Roof flaps

Actually, the roof flaps are operated by pressure inside the car that
builds up inside when the car is in a spin.  When the pressure inside the
car is greater than the pressure outside it made the cars light and the
started to fly into the air causing severe accidents.  Rousch Racing
invented them.
