I wouldn't argue about the RX-7, but the Supra (at least as modeled
in the game) is far superior to the 911. I think it is probably the
best all-around car. I've spent a lot of time with the Ferrari and
the Supra, and I think the Supra is better for Vertigo and probably
Alpine. The Ferrari is the best at Rusty Springs.

I think that it would be great, though unlikely. Here's what I believe
should be on the classic sports car list.
Shelby Cobra (of course)
Chevrolet Grand Sport (I like Sting Rays)
Ford GT40 (210mph top speed during the 60s! Amazing wheelspin!)
Mercedes-Benz 300SLR (Maybe a Mille Miglia stage course as well)
Jaguar D-Type (The most beautiful thing in British Racing Green)
Lotus Super 7 (2nd most beautiful thing in British Green and Yellow)

With a little more experience with the game, I
think you'll find that most cars have their place in the
game. For instance, try the Ferrari or Diablo on Vertigo
Ridge, then try it with the Supra. Perhaps I'm wrong, but
I'm pretty sure you can consistently make better times with
the Supra.

I doubt that the best times at Vertigo are produced with either
Ferrari or the Diablo. My best (for a 6-lap time trial) with
the Ferrari is at least 15 seconds slower than my best with
the Supra ( 9:54.6 )

I'm pretty positive the Viper can't come close.
