INDY CAR SIMULATION SERIES ANOUNCEMENT

by 6488.. » Tue, 25 Jan 1994 22:31:38

Hello all, I know this is a long message but it is worth reading,

What follows are the rules that have been established
for a simulation series that will be run using the IndyCar Racing
Simulation by Papyrus.  The series is being run from the America
On Line (AOL) service.  Through their capability to receive
mail from the internet the series director has made some rule
revisions to allow anyone with access to this news group who can send
EMAIL t participate.  I will post weekly results here soon after they
are released on AOL, usually on Monday mornings PST.

Another option to participate is to sign up for AOL.  The intial
sign up can be done at no cost for a 1 month trial period which
includes the AOL software (Windows, MAC or DOS versions available)
and file hours of connect time to explore the system.  If you like
it you can keep it for $9.95/month.  This includes 5 hours connect time
additional hours cost $3.50.  AOL supports connections up to 9600 Baud
at NO extra cost and unlike other services the bulletin boards don't
cost extra.  If you are interested send me an EMAIL with your NAME,
Mailing ADDRESS, and PHONE NUMBER (with area code).  I am not sure if
there is access overseas but if I get a note I'll ask.  If you can't
respond to this message by mail, my AOL address is PAULST...@AOL.COM.
I look forward to racing with all of you.

One other item the directors of this series have been running series
on Prodigy and AOL for the past few years.  They are reliable and
extremely responsive to competitors comments.  They also remember
to post the results.  One the series starts if will be finished.

IndyCar Racing Series Rules & Schedule

The event: IndyCar Racing Series.  The competition will be run on a weekly
basis using the IndyCar Racing Simulation by Papyrus.  No other sim will be
used.  Competitors must use an unmodified version of the program files.  The
driver data files will be the original files with one exception.  There may
be a modification made to provide the Nigel/Andretti cars a more realistic
appearance.  This may be achieved only through the file provided in the AOL
Auto Racing Library that performs this function (look for Mario Car Color Fix
- includes cars93.dat and drivers.txt files dated 12/12/93).  Drivers wishing
to obtain this file may contact ICRS director by E-Mail for more information.

Sign-up: Begins immediately.  Teams will submit the Driver name, screen name,
Engine Chassis combination, their car number, Team name, sponsorship and
division competing in via public post in the ICRS folder on the Pits Board by
Wednesday, Feb 2, 1994.  The first event of the season will be run Sunday,
Feb 6, 1994.

Results from each competitor will be submitted via E-Mail to Rick Simpson
(Cri...@AOL.COM), ICRS Director, no later than 8:00 pm each Sunday, the day
of the race.  Results will be provided in the following manner:

1. After you finish your race IMMEDIATELY exit IndyCar Racing.
2. Locate the files RESULTS.TXT  found in your IndyCar directory and copy
this file to an empty directory.
3. You will now need to edit information into this file. This may be done
through any windows editor or from the dos prompt by typing EDIT RESULTS.TXT.
4. Starting at the bottom of the page type in the following information: A)
Your real name; B) Your AOL screen name; C) Your team name; D) Car number; E)
What division you are competing in; F) Your starting position in the race and
qualifying speed; G) If you dnf for any reason include this information. In
addition you may add a brief summary or highlights of your race, although
this is not mandatory.
5. Next you must save the file and rename it. Rename the file using your
first initial and first four letters of your last name. For example, from the
dos prompt Jim Smith would type REN RESULTS.TXT JSMIT.TXT. Or if you are in a
windows editor simply choose file, save as JSMIT.TXT. (For drivers saving the
files for their entire season you may also add the race # into the file name
- Example JSMIT1.TXT for race #1, JSMIT2.TXT race #2, etc.).
6. It is VERY IMPORTANT that the above directions be carefully followed to
assure your results will be properly recieved and posted (for instance, if
you start another race, and run even 1 lap, your results.txt file will be
overwritten with the new race info). If you have any trouble or are unsure
about what you are doing contact the director for assistance. He will more
than happy to help.
NOTE: Internet drivers need only report the above information in note form
versus sending file. Please include winners ave speed, your finish position
and sec back, # of cars who did not finish and the reason for each.

ICRS will include 2 seperate divisions.  Drivers may compete in either or
both divisions as long as they meet the requirements.

Level I - The Basic Division:

May use any engine/chassis combination. Level I drivers MUST use either the
EASY or FAST default setup provided with the sim. No modifications of any
kind may be made with the following exceptions: You may adjust your fuel
capacity and any in-cockpit controls (turbo boost and anti-sway bars). The
setup rule is in effect for qualifying, race, and hot laps competition.

Set car damage indicator to "no car damage". The restart rule is in effect
for Level I competition.  That is, a driver who dnf's a race due to crash may
restart the race (shift-R) but must reduce the maximum boost used in the
restarted race by one.  In other words, if it is his first re-start, boost
may not exceed 8.

Entrants in this division must run with at least 10 competitors at each race.
If your system will not allow 10 competitors, contact the director for
arrangements to be made for a handicap system to be implemented.

Level II - The Advanced Division:

May use any setup and any engine/chassis combination.

Car damage indicator will be announced with the weekly race settings.  No
restart rule is in effect in this division. If a driver dnf's, he is out and
reports that finishing position.

Entrants in this division will be required to run a minimum of 15
competitors.  If your system will not allow 15 competitors, run the Level I
division. If you prefer to run more you may.

Race Length and Restrictions:

Race length will generally be held to a one hour time frame.  Some
competitors may take longer (those in the Level I division with the restart
rule) and some may be shorter, (those in the Level II division who DNF on the
first lap.  This will be announced the week prior to the event.

Oponent strength %, along with any weather conditions, will be announced one
week prior to each event and will be the only restriction placed on the
competitions. The oponent strength % will be different for the Level I and
Level II divisions.

Schedule:

February 6      Long Beach
February 13     Milwaukee
February 20     Portland
February 27     -off-
March 6              Toronto
March 13        Michigan
March 20                      New Hampshire (Louden)
March 27                     -off-
April 3         Nazareth
April 10                      Laguna Seca
April 17                      The 500 at a track to be named later...

Points:

Individual Points will be determined in a system similar to that of the PPG
Indy Car series, compiled to determine a champion in each division.  The
break down is as follows,

1 point for pole position (fastest qualifying lap speed/time)
1 point for Hot Lap leader of the week

And the following for placing:
20 points for first place.
16 points for 2nd.
14 for 3rd.
12 for 4th.
10 for 5th.
8 for 6th.
6 for 7th.
5 for 8th.
4 for 9th.
3 for 10th.
2 for 11th.
1 for 12th.

An individual champion will be named from each division.  This champion will
receive an Official Championship Certificate, Public engagement in the RPI
and the recognition that only such an accomplishment can bring.

Team points and restrictions:   Team points will be awarded as they are now
being done in LICS.  The highest place finisher from each team receives the
points for that position. For example if three competitors from Team A place
2nd, 4th and 10th in an event, and three competitors from a Team B place 1st
and 5th in that event, the team points would be awarded as follows;

Team B          9 points
Team A          6 points

As there were no other teams competing the highest finishers from each team
receives the points for that position.  The other competitors from that team
receive no points.  The Team Points scale is as follows;

9 for 1st
6 for 2nd
3 for 3rd
2 for 4th
1 for 5th

There are no limits set as to the number of competitors on a particular team.
Team points are tracked only for reporting purposes and no reward/recognition
will be provided team winners.

HOT LAPS POINTS - There will be a weekly Hot Laps competition during practice
which will provide an additional point in each division.  Details on this
competition simply require that the time be submitted by Midnight on the
Friday preceeding the competition. The fastest time/speed submitted at the
track on which the event takes place for that week will receive one point
added to the final results of that week.  There will be one Hot Lap point
awarded per division.

Final interpretation of any and all rules and regulations rests with the ICRS
directors. The rules as stated may and will change without notice for the
betterment of the series.

All drivers: Please run your race one time and one time only.

If you need any clarification of the above rules contact series director Rick
Simpson at CRI...@AOL.COM or co-director PETTY43...@AOL.COM
