Cat 4.9 or Radeon 9550 problems ??

by V \ » Fri, 08 Oct 2004 17:10:34

I am having problems with my CFS2 game freezing. Added now to my list of
games freezing is CMR4. It froze up solid during a replay. The only savings
grace is it managed to generate a "send arror message" box. I clicked yes
just to see and it actually told me it was ATI that was casuing the error to
come up. I have tried 2 different drivers with it. 4.6 and 4.9. Any ideas
what may be causing this PITA freezing? I posted more info a few posts up.
I am open to any ideas.

There is nothing wrong with the 4.9 drivers. I think you may be having
a problem with your power supply and it is causing the vid card to
freeze. Just to make sure, go to www.guru3d.com and download the beta
ATI 807 drivers. I just tested CFS2 with these drivers so know they
are good. To make sure you have a clean install of the drivers go to
the ATI website and get the CAT uninstaller and run that then install
these beta drivers I suggested you get. But as I already said, I think
the issue is due to the card not getting the power it needs. What
power supply do you have?

I just picked up a new 500w supply. I'd assume the card and everything else
is getting the power it deserves now. I tried the omega drivers last night
with the same result as well. I then tried the 4.9s with the Catalyst
CP..........it seems that it is running more stable. Was able to fly through
some quick combats in both CFS2 and CFS3. Funny how only my flight sims were
affected by this weirdness.        thanks, I'll go grab the betas now.

The  latest Omega's are using the same drivers as the betas I pointed
you too. Just stick with the Omega's. One thing that may help is to
slightly increase the voltage to the AGP slot in the motherboard bios
options. It should be at 1.5v now but you can push it up to 1.6v or
1.65v. It could be your card overheats with those sims, but
overheating usually will give you graphics glitches before it freezes
and that's why I don't think that is it. Try a different AGP aperature
in the bios, try 64, 128 or even 256. These kinds of problems can be
tricky to track down. Try AGP 4x if it is using 8x. Turn off fast
writes, although, the Omega drivers do that for you already. I pulled
my computer completely apart once to find out it was indeed my brand
new (at the time) Enermax 365w that was causing screen freezes like
you describe. Who is your 500w PSU made by?
