by Christopher Salm » Wed, 25 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I have a P-166 with an ATI Mach64 Graphics Pro Turbo wiht 4mb/Vram.

I am only getting a video speed of 157!

How can I improve this!  People with lower spec. machines are getting
better video speeds!

PLEASE ADVISE

Any help is greatly appreciated.

someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I figured out:

The VESA1.2 driver that is in the ATI PROM is very slow. The new VESA
2.0
driver that can be downloaded from ATI website is very fast and makes
the
ATI cards run as fast as the Matrox Millenium. Well programmed games
like Duke Nuken 3D recognise VESA2.0 and will switch to it when it's
present.
I get 28-45 FPS in HIGH RES FULL SCREEN in duke 3D on my P133 w/ ATI
Mach 64. My Cbench score goes from 40 to 49 in SVGA when I change to
the new VESA2.0 driver. That's more than a 20% speed up.

But the 'leading edge' GP2 ignores my new driver!! AAaaaarrrgghh!!!

You can try running Scitech Display Doctor as this may improve video speed.
However, much better would be to get a new video card. Cards based on the
ET6000 chipset are the best at the moment. Also, I presume your motherboard
has a version of the Triton chipset in it (ie, 430FX,HX,VX). Otherwise, it
may also be slowing down videospeed a lot as the chipset controls the PCI
bus.
