Nv40.72's Performance Report

by Tom Pabs » Sat, 16 Nov 2002 15:24:34

I just installed the 40.72's, from 29.80's.

System Specs:

512 RAM (PC2100 DDR)
MSI K7 Master mobo
eVGA GF4 ti 4200 (128mb) stock clocks
Win98SE
DX8.1 (refreshed)
IE6.1
RivaTuner 2.0, RC12
AGP=2x
Fastwrites=off
SBA=off

3DM01(SE) Scores: (all scores are 3 runs, averaged)
29.80's = 8408
40.72's = 9106 (8.3% increase)

NASCAR-2002 Bench (OGL, 1280x960x32+Quinc, but Aniso=off):
29.80's = 79 FPS
40.72's = 88 FPS (11.4% increase)

All D3D apps/games stable, no abnormalities. All normal biz ops stable, no
abnormalities. N2K2 is the only OGL game I run, it is completely stable, and
I swear the jaggies have declined noticeably....but can't bench it for
proof.

NV40.72 Driver Installation Outline:
1) Go to video properties, change video driver to Standard VGA.
2) Boot to shutdown.
3) Boot to VGA 640 desktop, delete Nvidia folder contents - boot to
shutdown.
4) Boot to VGA 640 desktop, reinstall DX8.1 - boot to shutdown.
5) Boot to VGA 640 desktop, install Nv40.72's (using exe installer) - boot
to shutdown.
6) Boot to 800 desktop, reset desktop to 1280x960x32, right click "Waste
Basket" to reset all desktop icons to original positions.
7) Driver Install Complete.

Tom

I have a GF3 and when I switched to the 40.72s my 3d mark score with stock
clock rates was a little over 7000. Which is about were I had been running
with my card overclocked to Ti500 speeds with the older drivers. Of course
it didn't take me long to overclock it and get even more. :)

FWIW I have found that the method of changing video drivers to standard
VGA before installing new drivers is not reliable.  This method
generally leaves old registry entries untouched, and also does not
necessarily get rid of control panel utilities.  Since Nvidia changed
control panel utilities recently, that can be a problem.  The better way
is to first unzip the new drivers to a temporary directory, then
uninstall the old drivers through the "add/remove programs" menu, and
then when the pc is done rebooting and is redetecting your video card
and trying to find drivers for it, click on the "have disk" option and
point it at the directory for the new drivers.  I have had no problems
doing just this and nothing else, even when changing from an ATI card to
a GF4.  Fewer reboots and fewer problems.  No need for Detonator
Destroyer, no need to reinstall DirectX.  YMMV.

Haqsau.....

That method works well, too.  And, that is generally the steps I would use
when installing interim reference drivers (interim = between WHQL versions).
However, with the WHQL driver versions, comes an "exe installer" and that
sweeps the registry entries clean as well as deleting previous inf driver
files (those lingering devils can cause you to select the wrong driver if
you don't pay attention).  Regarding DX reinstall.....I just do it as a
"habit".......since those files are easily corrupted.  It probably is not
necessary these days....but I don't see any harm.....and you know the Mr.
Murphy would like me to NOT do it just once....so he can***with my
system.  Also, I don't use the "properties tabs" for video card
settings.....so I don't care whether there's new control panel utilities or
not.  I use RivaTuner for all that......and usually install the latest
version of that at the same time with the new WHQL drivers.  I have stopped
installing "interim" drivers.......they rarely addressed "issues" with my
system.....and created a fair amount of instability.  Now, I just go with
the WHQL versions......less work, too.

I hear there are issues with this release that have been tied to utilities
that fix the 60hz issue with Win2K/XP.  Apparantly the 40.72 drivers don't
like these guys...

Which means I can't install the 40.72's.  I will NOT run a 22" monitor at
60hz in my games.  I don't want to have to pit to puke every 10 laps.

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not "stuck" in 60hz. The
reason I say this is I got an "outta range" error and I doubt that 60hz is
outt range even at 1600 for my monitor. Maybe that game overrides windows
some how.

I was ready to uninstall the 40.72's due to the rr problem...the rr utility
in Riva Tuner corrected the problem in desktop but reverted to 60hz in GPL
using D3D or OpenGL...installed ReForce and the rr problem is gone. I've not
run any benchmarks but performance on my rig has increased with this
version.

This driver set causes problems on my system.  In 2D I get a stutter, kinda
like a HD access.  3d is fine though.   I went back to Omega drivers.

Nv40.72's Performance Report

by Andrew Hollo » Mon, 18 Nov 2002 02:19:28

I tried the 40.72 driver today, but (in GPL at least) I found that while the
performance was okay while driving, the menus seemed very slow, almost
unusably slow. It's funny, because it seemed only to effect the menu you get
when you enter a track and the car set-up menu. When in the track menu, the
replay portion of the screen would stutter along with the sound.

I reverted back to 30.82, and all is fine again.

My system is: -
1GHz Athlon C
Asus A7V133
256Mb PC133
Ti4400
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1

Nothing is overclocked.

Andrew.

That's why I went back to the 30.82's.  Menus and mouse movement were
slow in GPL, even just trying to move the mouse.  I have:

900 mhz Celeron
ASUS CUSL2
384 mb PC133
128 mb Ti 4200
SB Live 5.1
Win 98

Not much in common there, except a slow CPU, a GF4, and the SB Live.
What OS are you using?

IMHO, Refresh Force is the best of the breed out there right now.  It
actually seems to understand and take into consideration the potential for
multiple monitor entries in the registry, and actually tags the PROPER
active monitor for the changes.

I think this is where some of the other RR utilities fail.
