I FINALLY GET IT!!!

by Drew » Tue, 11 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I have been trying for months to improve my times in GPL.  I
bought a LWFF wheel, a soundblaster Live card, practiced ad
nauseum, but still could not break 1:30 at Monza, 1:07 at the
Glen, 1:24 at Mosport.  And what's all this voodoo talk on the
newsgroup about trailbraking and steering with the pedals?  All
smoke and mirrors?
Then I was having a fevered GPL dream while I napped on the
couch after 8 straight hours of Med School lectures.  In my dream
it came to me:  Carry your braking into the corner and apply the
throttle as you let off the brake!  Holy Jumping Catfish!  For a
year and a half I had been off the throttle, on the brake, off
the brake, on the throttle.  No control whatsoever!  I woke up
and fired up the game.  A few warm up laps and I knew I was onto
something big.  Within a few laps I ripped off a 1:29.7.  Hey, I
know, no big deal, but it is the key to the future of racing
glory for this leadfoot.
I have seen the promised land, and they race fast there.  I
will sleep well tonight.  I just had to share my revelation.  Now
I must go back and train.

The funny thing is that JYS is anti-trailbraking. He denies that he ever did
it. Balderdash.

I remembe when the Pi people were first experimenting with telemetry. They
went out tested their equipment at a GP, installing it in several cars and
using it to produce friction circle traces.

Someone persuaded JYS, (retired for years at this point), to take a few laps
in the current Tyrrell. He produced the closest thing to a perfect circle I,
or I believe anyone else, has ever seen.

Sorry Jackie, but you *can't do that* without trailbraking.

Telemetry also put paid to driver claims that they took certain corners
flat. They don't, not even on fast ovals. They brake.

Often times the driver is the least reliable source of just what it is he's
doing out there

So were you left-foot braking, but just not 'trailbraking'?  Or were you
right-foot braking, and converted to left-foot?

I was left foot braking just not trail braking.  When I first
started playing, I  spun every time a continued braking into a
corner.  So I just would brake in a straight line as I
approached the corner but released as I entered the corner.
Naturally, the front end would go light and I would have
minimal control through the corner.  Now I have a better wheel
and more control.

Hi Drew

Just out of interest, do modern F1 require this sort of control as
well?

If it does then I guess I have to throw away my joystick and go with
wheel setup.

Ok.  I still haven't figured it out yet.  Although I finally got my TSW to work
in split-axis mode, I haven't tried left-foot braking again.  My left foot
isn't coordinated enough...

Same test done several years earlier with a Lotus 72 and Ronnie
Peterson resulted in his going well outside the traction circle. Although
they tried they were never able to explain how it was possible or
what Ronnie was doing!

Very much so. The smoking inside front wheel is a telltale.

Eldred,

Your first few attempts will probably be a frustrating mess, but force
yourself to brake with your left foot.  After a couple of days it will feel
natural and after 4 or 5 days you will definately be faster.

It depends on the driver.  Michael Schumacher is famous for this (coming
from a kart background helped). But Damon Hill, for example, never could
get the hang of left foot braking
