Toyota Corolla to save $20 on '97 model at owner safety expense.

After purchasing a new '97 Toyota Corolla, I find out there
is NO intermittent windshield wipers. The dealer told me Toyota
will have charged $20 more for it.

When I asked the dealer to add it on and I will pay for the $20,
I was told it will cost me thousand of dollar to add it on since the
circuit is not available.

Without this intermittent wipers, it is VERY inconvenient to drive in the
rain for I have to keep turn the wipers on and off. Very often,
when the windshield is already clear, the wipers keep moving and
they DO block/interfere my view. This certainly creates a safety
hassle for my driving.

I think it is a safety violation. Hard to believe since my 1973
Capri is equipped with this intermittent wipers, I don't know
if any other car doesn't.

I appreciate you help or advise me on where to get help. I can

Thanks/Vincent.

No, about $20 to add it.  There are aftermarket devices you can add.
The circuit is very simple.  See a big auto parts catalog.

Since you are posting this to rec.auto.simulation do you want us to
simulate Intermitant Wipers? What OS are you running? Have you
Callibrated the Wiper controll after each reboot? What sort of FPS are
you getting from your display? Do you have UniVBE loaded?
People are raving about the Screaming 3D cards.. Perhaps that will
help the problem. Have You written a letter to Sierra?

That's an easy add-on. I installed one on my 68 chevy pick-up. You should
be able to find one at any decent auto parts shop or catalog. I've had mine
at least 12 years with no problem and works great. Don't remember the
manufacturer but the the model I think is ZT-101. Gives an adjustable delay
from 0 to 20 seconds.
good luck

Good thing you checked this car out thoroughly before making your purchase.

Also, I think you are in the wrong group.  You might want to post this to
rec.autos.makers.toyota.corolla.no.intermittent.wipers.you.cheap.bastards.

Add on kits are available.  Pulse wipers weren't stock on your 73 Capri
either, you just remembered to order them.

Don't blame Toyota - you bought the base model, not the deluxe. If you
want the cheapest car, you don't get the toys. The entire
intermuittent circuit in the Toyota has always been in the switch
itself. Simply installing the wiper switch assy, (complete multi
purpose switch I believe on your unit) will give you pulse wipers. Get
the switch for the loaded model, and see if your dealer will allow you
something for the original. Sooner or later someone is going to catch
their coat sleave on one of the levers, breaking it off, and they can
sell him yours at a discount, making two customers happy.

I did quite a few of those upgrades, including my own older Corolla
and Tercel.

Let me get this right.....you road tested a car, sat with the
salesman while he showed you the features of the car, you looked at
the sticker on the car that listed the features it came with, and
now you're whinning about the lack of intermittent wipers? You
acknowledge that you knew about what intermittent wiper are,so you
must have known where the controls to them would have been, and
should have looked for them, or asked about them BEFORE you paid
your money for the car. Take personal responsibility for YOUR
actions, don't whine all over the USENET because you didn't know
enough about the features to the car you bought.

the circuit is not available.

Using genuine Toyota parts and shop labor. it could certainly cost
a few hundred to a thousand dollars to equip it with intermittent
wipers. This assumes that the wiring harness may be incompatible
from one model with intermittent and another without. To equip it
EXACTLY like a model that has intermittent wipers want may well cost
a thousand dollars. This is of course is not the route anyone with
common sense would take. Much quicker and easier <not to mention a
great deal cheaper> would be to add on an intermittent wiper kit
from one of the many auto parts store.

Well I quess you must have it pretty tough.......gee, just think,
you got to lift a finger on your right hand and nudge the wiper
switch to clear the windshield. I can see the law suit now...."well
your honor, you see......I hit that other car while driving in the
rain because I had to drive my car and think at the same time" And
the judge says "what do you mean, think while driving?" Your reply
would,I imagine, "well I was driving my VERY unsafe Corolla when I
had to remember that the windshield was getting rain/snow on it,
then I had to think about where the wiper switch was to clear of the
same w/shield and while thinking, I lost connection with the real
world around me and hit the other car"  Don't call a lawyer, call
Geraldo, Sally Jesse, or on of the other wacked out TV shows that
cater to the "kookier" side of this country, they would just love
your sad story.

Many, many cars and trucks don't come with them. And the only safety
violation I can see in your sad little tail is you driving on the
roads in the rain/snow, while there are others around on the same
roads.

Get a grip Vincent. And to others who may have read my reply, sorry
to have been so long winded, but these stories of lack of personal
responsibilities drove me over the edge for a brief moment. Like the
woman who sued over coffee spilling on her.

Now this is a technician I would like to take my car to!  If my VW
wasn't so realiable (it better be, it's a '95) I'd be hoping the
technicians around here had that kind of knowledge!
