Serial Cable linking question

Serial Cable linking question

by Andy Le » Mon, 01 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I've recentely got my laptop (Dell Latitude P150) serial cabled to my
desktop (P200 MMX) to play some games with mates......Duke Nukem 3D,
Quake, GP2 (yes, it does work!), Moto Racer etc.

When setting these games up, some of the ask for the speed of the
cable connection, 9600, 14400, 19200.......right upto 38400.
I usually just plump for 9600 and everything seems to work just fine,
but what is the max link speed of a serial cable?

If anyones got any good ideas for other games that work well over a
serial cable, please let me know....especially driving games.

many thanks,

Andy.

It isn't so much the cable you have to worry about, but your serial
port.  I have found that the serial cable I made from solid copper phone
cord can handle whatever I set the serial ports too.  At least for
transferring files.

ICR II, Nascar 1 & 2, Duke 3d all appear to work fine with the ports set
to 9600.  If it works, I wouldn't fiddle around with it.

If both UART are 16550, you can use 38400 if the allow such a setting. I
got the PC and i'm using serial
link and also network link with IPX protocol in Win95, and they all work
fine. For the driving game i'm using GP2, ICR2 (serial),Nascar2(IPX or
serial), and F1RS from Ubisoft, once i got the game. All
the game supporting IPX protocol, you can use them with Kali and play on
the internet with them.

Bye for now
Coco

The max link speed is limited by the UARTs at either end, not by the
cable. The cable is certainly good for 112KBps. It's just a matter of
setting up the flow control right and making sure the baud rate is the
same.

You'll likely not see any real benefit to exceeding 9600 or 19200, so just
use whatever highest speed you can get to work reliably.
