Weekend to the Ring

by Andre Warrin » Wed, 13 Jun 2001 21:48:03

Last weekend I went to the Ring with 5 friends and 3 Alfa GTV's.
It was totally fantastic! Sunday was a very busy day at the track. We
thought we could make a bit of a nice impression with our Alfa's, but
between all those Ferrari's, Porsche's and Lotusses our cars suddenly
didn't look that impressive anymore :)

The first lap was the most impressive.. a really weird experience. I
knew every corner allthough I never drove there before in real life.
The first part was a bit confusing, you start halfway the long
straight, and they skip the first loop, so before I knew it we were
allready at Hatzenbach. From there on it was GPL in real 3D :)

Entering Flugplatz for the first time was VERY impressive.. much
steeper than I expected it to be, and I even got a bit scared when we
took it (just a LITTLE BIT mind you :)
After Flugplatz came the fast section. Allthough I knew we could speed
there, the corner was completely blind and we didn;t have the guts to
take it full speed the first time.

A couple of corners later came Adeanauer Forst and that corner scared
the hell out of us.. blind corner, and it turns in way more than we
expected. No wonder a lot of people were watching at that point, I'm
sure a lot of people get tricked by that corner. In GPL you can cut
that corner without damage (allthough you will get a black flag) but
in real life the curbings are quite steep and you DON'T want to cut
that corner in real life :))

Karussel was wicked. We took the middle line (the white bit) and the
car gets sucked against the road. It felt liked karussel went on and
on and on, but in reality it only lasts a couple seconds..

On the straight at the end we got a topspeed of 210km/ph, then we had
to brake again, because you have to exit the track halfway the
straight.

We did some more laps and each lap we felt more confident. Our last
lap was between 11-12 minutes. We had screeching tires at every
corner, so for our car that was quite a good lap I think :)

The second day was even more interesting, since it was raining. And
driving on a wet Ring is quite an experience.. thank God for ABS :))

It was a fantastic weekend, and in a month we want to go again. This
time I will take my Peugeot 106 with me, let's see how that baby
behaves on the Nordschleife..

We taped out races, first I have to figure out how I can connect my
VCR to my PC, and then I'll upload some of our laps.

A friend lended us a digital handcam (panasonic, fantastic toy :)
We thought of a couple of the suggested solutions to fasten the cam,
but after a couple of failed tries we thought 'what the heck, we'll
just hold the cam'.
Well, it resulted in some interesting footage.. it was really hard for
me to hold the cam steady on the Ring, and at every bump in the road
the cam was moving to all sides.
In the end I'm quite happy with it actually, when I watch the video
with the moving cam I really get that 'I have to puke now' feeling
again :)

I have to figure out how to connect my VCR to my pc first (I've got an
Asus GFII GTS Deluxe, any how-to tips are welcome) and then I have to
find some space to upload them. I'll put a post here when it's ready.
Oh, and I'll cut out the bits where I'm screaming of fear.

On our second day it was raining heavily. Not a single biker on the

If you think they are nuts at the ring, look what they do in Paris:
