To whom it may concern:
I know they are deadlines for you all to bring out a product, especially
demos..; )
But since the only ways to get a demo first, is usually the internet, then bbs,
and then the local software stores ( You are way behind, if you get it here ).
Some people who very "expensive" ISPs, we all know who they are; ), and since
time is of the essence, is there a possibility you could all break up the files,
or span them??
I know you all are aware of "zip", God forbid. Yuck!! I know "zip" is one of the
easiest archivers to use and the most popular. But "zip" isn't really flexible
at all!! It's compression is terrible, but better than nothing, right?? ; )
You could use "arj", but not everyone uses it. It's downloadable at some www
sites, though. This archive has better compression than zip. You could also span
the files to any size you want. The usual spanning, or "breaking up of big
programs", is 1.44mb for each file.
Now I can hear you say, "What about self-extracting archives?", here is one
problem with arj. When you want to convert over to a "sfx" archive, the limit
for arj is "only" 360k!! Thus, for example, the NASCAR 2 Demo wouldn't work!!
Ahh..But I have one suggestion for you all, how about "rar"?? This utility
compresses 12-15% more than zip!! 5% percent more than arj!! This archive has no
limit for making a sfx archive!! And you could also span the program..; )
I have "unzipped" the NASCAR2 Demo, all 8.1mb of it, and recompressed with rar
to a self extracting archive. The final result was 7mb!!
Before any flames begin, I have an ISDN modem and a 28.8 modem. My ISP offers
unlimited time. I just thought I would say something about the "other" ISPs that
are expensive and costing my fellow "sim-racers" dinero!! Every little bit
helps, right??
For example, an AOLer tries to download the file, n2demo.zip, the server
crashes, and no more file. ; ( Time to start all over again. ;( If you had
spanned the files, he/she would have at least got one or two of the files
completed. Just thinking of others..that's all..
Or you could get a utility called, "hjsplit"..
take care..
