GPL is like golf

It can be as gratifying, or as frustrating...  I find myself constantly
analyzing everything about the way I drive - or more specifically the way
I take the individual corners - much like the way I do with my golf swing
in particular situations.

Taking a corner at the ultimate edge of speed, executed perfectly, gives
me the same rush as slamming a 280 yard drive.  BUT - the rest of the
course must still be negotiated before I can call it a good lap (much
like a hole in golf).  I then have to put together all the laps that make
up a race before I can gain the ultimate satisfaction of a job well done
(18 holes).

As frustrating as GPL can get, the gratification keeps me coming back.
Now, if golf wasn't so damn expensive, I might play it as much as I race
GPL ;)

What a revelation!

Having gotten the schizo Lotus somewhat under my control during the months of
playing the demo, I was naturally loyal to it when the full sim was released.
I gave all the other cars a few laps here and there, but was determined to
stick with the Lotus, tune it right, and master it.  ("Mastery" is a VERY
relative concept.)  ;-)

After many Lotus laps last evening, I was getting pissed and frustrated.  I can
do pretty hot laps with it -- and the times will certainly improve with set-up
refinements and practice.  But I find it takes ALL of my concentration to keep
the car under control, moving fast, on the track.  And when I try to race, I
find it impossible to focus when I'm watching traffic, too, and someone great
is driving right up my tailpipes.

So I switched to the Eagle, just for the hell of it.  Hated it for not being
the Lotus for a couple of laps.  Cursed when it didn't respond instantly like
the Lotus.

Well, within 11 laps, I could beat my best Lotus personal best times at Monza
by half a second!  That's with the out-of-the-box setup with the Eagle, against
my preliminary modified setups for the Lotus!

The increased speed is an unexpected bonus, though.  What I love is that I'm
just a bit more relaxed driving the Eagle.  It's just enough more stable and
predictable in its response to input.  I may even be able to race the thing
without the white knuckles and first-lap crashes that I was experiencing with
the Lotus.

Man, I LOVE this sim!

Just an opinion from my experience.  Your mileage may differ ...

Drive safely!

Indeed, i get my kicks out of going round the first corner at monza
and the corner before the backstraight full throttle in full opposite
lock, woooooooooooooooooooo skim that barrier and apply the throttle
to power out of the corner

Devon....

A good corner is like hitting the SWEET SPOT....the golf analogy is a very
good one!!!!!!

Exactly!  I was thinking the same thing last night.
I have a tee-time on Saturday that I kind of wish I
hadn't made - it will seriously eat into my seat time
with GPL.

The real dilemma - How to do justice to both hobbies and
still stay married ?

I just picked up my GPL from the postoffice today. I certainly do hope it
snows this weekend here in Stockholm so I can cancel my tee times.

Finally something with a better driving model than GP2.

well I have a 3 hcp so golf isn't nearly as hard for me as GPL

I can play 18 w/o a bad mistake most of the time but I have yet to fin a
race w/ damage on

my course (6700 yards) costs $15 a round, best deal in the city
the $2500 new computer bill is the problem
