Can anybody tell me what REFLECTIONS in the sound options of NASCAR 3 is
supposed to do?  Any why is it grayed-out, so that I can't enable it?  I have a
SB Live sound card.

Thanks,

James

Sounds like A3D to me - sounds can be reflected off objects within the
virtual world (like ray-tracing).

Creative sound cards (including the SBLive) use a different system
called EAX (Environmental Audio) which uses statistical methods to get
effects like going through a tunnel, but which doesn't actually simulate
the path of the sounds.

I believe the Matrox MX300 card supports A3D.

The SBPIC64 (Ensoniq AudioPCI) supports A3D in software
supposedly. I'll let you know when I get the game :-)

It is A3D and it works well.  When driving out of the walled area of pit
row, the sound changes to reflect the wider area of the track.  The sound
also changes in the middle of 3 wide, etc.  BTW, it's the Diamond Monster
MX300 which is a great card.  I'm thinking about rear speakers to see how
much it adds.

Rear speakers for the card add quite a lot, IMO--enough to make it
worthwhile buying a pair.  Try to match your front speakers, if you can.

I have a Magic Wave A3D card but the reflections are still grayed out.  This
must be for Vortex 2.0 support only, which the new Diamond card is.

Correct.  Geometry based reflections are a function of A3D2.0 and
require a Vortex2 chip.

Neil,

Actually any Vortex2 sound card will do it.  :)  And its not the Matrox
MX300, it's the Diamond MX300. :)

Any A3D Vortex 1 crad will alos work in the game. (Like the MX-200)  What you
have to do is get the latest drivers from  www.a3d.com (make sure they are for
the Vortex 1 board) and the new A3D drivers. The new drivers support A3D 2.0.
I did this on mine and get full 3D sound and can enable reflections and mine
is only a Vortex 1 card (Magic Wave PCI by I/O Magic)
the drivers on A3D site are like reference drivers for a video card. They
will work with any card as long as it is the right chipset (Vortex 1)

I guess that explains why it doesn't work for me then. My Ensoniq
AudioPCI has software support for A3D (using A3D.DLL) but it
must be for 1.0.
