Does anyone know if the announced PC port of San Francisco Rush ever got
released?
the original San Francisco Rush was a coin-op arcade game by Atari that
used a 200 MHz MIPS R5000 CPU and
3Dfx graphics chips: one PixelFX chip w/ 2 MB RAM + two TexelFX chips
w/ 4 MB RAM, on an Obsidian board.
this graphics configuration was a little better than a standard consumer
3Dfx Voodoo Graphics card (Voodoo 1) since the Obsidian board in the arcade
machine had the additional TexelFX chip and 2 MB RAM beyond what the
consumer Voodoo Graphics card had.
the entire arcade board (MIPS CPU + Obsidian board + memory + sound +
everything else)
was known as the Atari 'Flagstaff Hardware' - it powered the arcade San
Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing
and San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition , games from 1996.
from there, the original San Francisco Rush was converted to the
Nintendo-64, and although it was a very decent console conversion, the
graphics were trimmed down noticably to be able to run on N64's slightly
weaker hardware (93 MHz MIPS R43xx, the 150K polygon/sec Reality
Co-Processor, and smaller amount of memory.)
-Then- there was supposed to be a PC port of San Francisco Rush - either the
original, or SF Rush The Rock
Alcatraz Edition, or perhaps both. It was to be ported for PCs with
consumer 3Dfx Voodoo cards, naturally, since the original arcade games used
somewhat beefed up Voodoo 1 technology. by the time the PC port would
have arrived, the Voodoo2 would have been out, giving PCs more graphics
capability than the SF Rush arcade games.
I dunno if V2 would have factored into a PC port of the V1-based SF Rush
games or not.
So, there's the background to refresh your memory.
can anyone tell me what actually happened to the PC version of San
Francisco Rush
and / or San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition ?
I *vaguely* faintly recall reading that it had been released, but that it
was pretty obscure. if it came out at all.
Assuming it was obscurely released, if you've played it, any impressions on
how it compared to the original arcade ?
thanks in advance
