Too Much Memory?

by Brian McLerno » Sun, 09 Sep 2001 03:29:34

Hi All,
With ram so cheap nowadays, I recently added a third 256Mb SDRAM stick
to my photo/*** computer, bringing my total up to 768Mb from 512Mb.  At
512Mb all my sims run great (GPL, N Heat, F1CS2k, N3, N4).  Once I added the
third stick, all my other programs (Photoshop, etc.) run fine but all my
sims crash or lock up at some point in their start up (with the exception of
N4, which, doh! I didn't think to try!)  I think I've heard of this problem
with GPL but not the others.  Can anyone shed some light on what may be
causing this for me?

Thanks!

Are you sure it's the right kind of memory? I had the same problem
with my machine. I had pc133 in it and I bought another stick of what
I thought was pc133, but it was pc100. I had so many freak problems
with my machine until I figured it out.

If your using Win2000 it should be an issue.  If your using Win95 or (8 then
there is a known problem.  You need to set the max cache to 512MB.  I forget
the exact setting but if you do a search I'm sure you can find it.

Go long as all the memory is the same speed, and you have had it checked so
that there are no faults or hard errors. Then you have to set the vcache.
Goto http://www.racesimcentral.net/  under windows tweaks and look for the info
on setting the vcache in your system.ini file.
That's what I had to do, with a very similar system. I can run all sims with
no lock ups.

do you know how much memory your mainboard can cache?

On an Athlon, that's not an issue, since the L2 cache is onboard the Athlon
itself. Athlon's L2 is capable of caching upto 4GB.

Wrong. Friend of mine put 1.4 gigs of ram on his AMD 1.33 system. After
700mb of ram used (opened a bunch of progs) the system ran out of memory
even though only 43% of the ram was being used. Its the cache that limits
how much ram you can use. Sure the MB supports it but the processor cache is
what limits it. I saw it for myself.

I don't think it is the processor cache that is the problem. That is
constantly refreshed using an LRU algorithm to discard the oldest data.
Even the old mainboards that could only cache 64 meg of RAM would
continue to operate. They just wouldn't cache the additional memory,
causing access to it to be slower. With modern boards, all of the
supported memory is cached. With 32 bit boards and processors, up to 2
gig could be supported.

I'd bet that if you look, you'd find that Windows allocated about half of
the RAM to a disk cache. This makes it unavailable for use by the
processes. There are utilities that can reduce the value and make more
RAM available to applications.

Windows NT introduces a different problem. Only memory that is backed by
paging space can be committed. Additional RAM beyond the size of the
paging space is automatically assigned to disk cache. The minimum paging
space should be equal to available RAM plus an additional 12 meg that is
required by the operating system.

if you are using win9x, you have to increase your vcache size. otherwise win
tries to grab the entire 768, causing probs for other apps.
from my memory, go into sys.ini, add line under [386 enh] maxvcache= (the
byte equivalent of 512MB).  ms support pages explain.

Too Much Memory?

Thanks to everyone who replied for all your help.  I went to that site
btgoss recommended and applied the lines to my system.ini file regarding
vcache after I reinstalled the new 256mb stick, also changed my virtual mem
settings as they suggest.  Now, all my sims (N3, N4, NHeat, F12000, and
F12000CS all run great!!!  I'm even noticing more detail (transparent,
glowing track lites at Richmond & Bristol that wasn't there before) while
framerates have stayed the same.  Also, I was noticing in F12000CS and
F12000 (before the memory fixes) that I'd see the track ahead being drawn,
but now it's already there when I round a corner!  Awesome!!!
Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Only problem is, GPL still won't work.  It loads OK, but when I go to race a
track, it says: "Could not initialize the replay system" and cancels the
weekend.  Would reinstalling GPL fix it?  Or is there some GPL setting that
needs to be changed?  Thanks again for all the assistance!
