TG just thought the track was more important than the drivers.  Guess
he's learned differently since then but he's either too stubborn or
too stupid to get back with the people who made his granddad a success
in the first place.  Notice I didn't say made TG a success -- like
Dubya Bush, all he's ever done is inherit the family name...

Do any of you think that the last straw for Tony was when Emerson Fittipaldi
chose to drink the Orange juice instead of the Milk?

Cheers!

Why would that matter?  He cuts the month to two weeks, lets 35 drivers in,
ect.  Tradition does not mean a damn thing to this man.

Or maybe he just got tired of CART allowing Penske and others to bring
special engines for that race and dominate the race like what was hapening
b4 the split ...

You mean the way Penske dominated in '95?  Oh, wait, nevermind...  How
about the way Menard's Buick always won Indy...oh, wait, nevermind...

the greatest thing TG had was TRADITION and Mr Hulman knew this, why
do you think he said those "words" till he died?same as harry at
wrigley, fans LOVE tradition!

what is the opposite of tradition? change the buzz word of new
management types. 'you must accept change" we are now being told... TG
has fallen for this line like a high school soph being told by a
*** 'you sure are cute honey'.....

i have been following the 500 since '57, it was always 'the greatest
spectacle in racing'
this year i hear "the Premiere racing event of the World" PLA-leze...
is this just to not slight the F1 scene?  did anyone hear the old
slogan? did i miss it?

the crazy thing is alot of his ideas had 'some' validity... slow em
down , lower the costs.. but there was no compromise.
so what do we have now? i'll tell you what-
waitng for him to Sell or get smart-
hope, that one happens before too many of us never see the greatness
return. but what TG is betting on is the non race "FANS" showing month
of may interest, and not giving a hoot about what drivers show up.

talk to some younger (high school age) guys/girls. ask them about the
Indy 500... THEY DON'T CARE. and if they do, they DON'T know about the
split. so in time, TG wins. those kids that DO become "FANS" will buy
tickets because they won't know any better. Thats his whole plan. and
by then all the CART boys will be long retired.

did anyone notice "Pole DAY"? in the past it was almost as crowded as
Race day.... what i saw was what looked like a practice day. say about
10am on a tuesday.
Target /Ganassi made ALOT of USA open wheeled racing fans VERY happy.
why? cause they came an played by HIS rules, and whupped 'em!

sad.. sad..  sad.
c'mon tony, win the fans BACK, make a overture to compromise. you'll
be a hero. i might even visit the speedway again-

Penske brought in the pushrod Ilmor 209 engine in response to the
EXTREMELY preferential treatment Menard and the Buicks got.  With the
boost advantages of a Buick they could go 5 to 10mph faster than the
racing motors.  However...they sucked fuel like crazy and had to be
detuned for the race....It was always wierd to see lap record holding
pole sitters lose 4 or 5 posistions at the start.
So Penske took advantage of rules written to help Menard.  It wasn't
CART that wrote those rules...USAC or whomever TG(whose name I shall not
utter) was in control of wrote the rules.  How many years did Menard run
the Buicks?  How long did it take him to get them 'right'?
and how long did Ilmor take to get the Mercedes mill 'right'?

John Menard is 10 times richer than Roger Penske and he can bring his
special engines.  Never worked very well.

BTW it was TONY GEORGE who allowed Roger Penske to bring his special
engine.  It was a dumbass rule changes to allow those V8 pushrods

BTW it was TONY GEORGE who allowed Roger Penske to bring his special

The motor that John Menard brought to Indy was the stock block Buick V-8, it
was not special.  The very same motor that comes from the factory, of course
with modifications.  The whole point of the Stock Block rule was so that ANYONE
could come to Indy and run the race for a reasonable amount of money.  They
were allowed more turbo boost to make them competetive (51? 55?) and because
Indy was a USAC event, that was the only race they could run and be
competetive.  CART allowed the motors, they just wouldn't give them the boost
allowance, making them a non-factor.

Now comes Penske.  He bastardized the rule and made a race only motor that
complied with the specs of the pushrod V-8.  Was he within his rights?
Absolutley. And because he met every spec, TG had no right to disallow the
engine. But in my book it went against the meaning and spirit of the rule,
which was to help low budget teams compete.  In effect, Penske went and
outspent the other teams.
I guess that's the difference between Legal and Ethical.
