Difference in CPU speed in GPL

by Wosc » Sun, 13 Dec 1998 04:00:00

For all you Celeron overclockers and anyone that has overclocked their CPU
out there, I was wondering what difference you saw in GPL frame rates with
say a 50Mhz change and 100Mhz.  I have a 350Mhz P2 with a voodoo2 12MB and
all that fun stuff and i get decent frames (nothing to complain about) but i
was thinking of either overclocking to 400 or getting a celeron and OC it to
like 500.  My friend has a P2 450 and he gets 22 min at the start of a 20
car race with every detail on, with my 350 i get 15 with all details and i
normally tune down the graphics to get good FPS at the start (i am not a
person that HAS to have every detail on like some people, i suffered through
CPR with a Cyrix PR150 with no detail on).  I was just wondering if you
think i should go ahaid and go to 400 (its winter so i shouldnt have a
overheating peoblem) or maybe just get a celeron.  GPL is all processor
dependant (why sli has no difference) so it may have a drastic improvment.

 Howdy Wosco,
My C300A at 300mhz gives me about 20-26 FPS w/ all cars and all graphics on
except a few details removed from the mirrors while in the pits, and close
to 36 fps with a few cars in view while on the track. At 450 I get 29 fps
while driving down the pits and 36 fps on the track w/ around 6 or 7 cars in
view. btw this is w/ a monster 4 meg. Cant wait to try out a Voodoo2 12 meg.
  Hope that helps.

Wosco,
I rember racing with Adam and you over the summer. I am about to put
together a system with a Celeron. Be sure you get a Malay one or one that
has been tested at 450mhz. There are a small percentage that will not do
450mhz. What frame rates do you think I will be able to get with a TNT card.
I also have a pure 3d card as my original voodoo card. Hopefully I will be
able to race with you guys soon. My frame rates online now are too slow.

Thanks, Cartbrian

I just upgraded this week from a P233 to a BH6,c300a combo.The difference
between 450mHz and 504mHz is very small, not worth the extra stress on the
CPU,also at 112mHz FSB speed, the PCI bus is also oc'.
I purchased from Minotaur (www.minotaur.com) and got a tested c300a SL32A Malay
stable at 450mHz,worth it for an extra $20.
I finally get GPL in it's full glory!19 AI cars and  smooth as can be!

Or you could get another Voodoo2 card and run SLI graphics.
