RANT: Charging for commentaries...

by Colin Harri » Tue, 19 Feb 2002 02:25:12

Last season, major league baseball decided to charge a nominal ten dollar
fee to listen to baseball on the internet, and blocked local radio stations
from broadcasting the games through the net. Now Nascar's charging too to
listen ($29.95)....bastards! It's hard enough over here with one hour's
coverage of a race, a WEEK later, (on Eurosport), and now we can't even
listen to it without paying....
The world's full of money-grabbers...*sigh*

RANT: Charging for commentaries...

I have to question the value of a racing radio broadcast.  I would think
that an internet broadcast would be done to raise brand awareness and to
sell seats to an event.  When a company starts charging to hear that
broadcast then it cuts the audience in half (at least) and is not able to
promote it's product.  I understand that it costs money to put this thing on
the net, but is the point to make immediate money or is it a long term
investment.  I would think it would be a long term investment.  Promote the
product, sell your sponsors, recoup the costs in increased ticket sales.

To make a long story short, I agree with you.  NASCAR and major league
baseball are losing sight of the long term health of their product in
exchange for immediate profits.

From what I understand, it is Turner Broadcasting that is starting to
charge.  The have taken over the site Nascar.com, and will be trying to make
a profit off of it.

That is another gimmick Real is using to get users to their web pages.  Get
the FREE Real One player....see all the keeno stuff you can see & hear???
$9.95 please....
You will see companies like Real buying the internet broadcast rights to
all sorts of stuff.

Trying to make a PROFIT????  The dirty rotten un-American bastards!! <g>

MLB got $10 from me last year, and when there's no way I can hear my Cubs on
any local station here half a country away, it was the cheapest
entertainment deal I've had since GPL.  Same won't be true for me for
Nascar, but it will be well worth it to some folks.

Er, no, that's maybe the SECOND best entertainment deal since gpl, the first
being MLB the year before, when it was free. As it should be.

Whats worse, you even have to pay if you want to watch their video clips
archive. Whats next? $30 per month to watch The Kellys?
