Hi,

Does anyone know any resource on the NET that explains the physics
behind suspenion dynamics?  Or perhaps a good book still in print?

Regards,
John

Dunno about on the net, but how 'bout:

Bastow, Donald, and G. Howard, _Car Suspension and Handling,
Third Edition_, Pentech Press Ltd, London, 1993.

Campbell, Colin, _New Directions in Suspension Design - Making the
Fast Car Faster_, Robert Bentley Inc., Cambridge MA, 1981.

Milliken, William F. and Douglas L., _Race Car Vehicle Dynamics_,
    SAE Publications, Warrendale, PA, 1995.

Smith, Carroll, _Tune to Win_, Aero Publishers Inc., Fallbrook, CA,
    1978.

Performance Handling

You might also see if you can get the last 4 issues of SportsCar which is
published by the SCCA.  They each had an article in them that explained
setting up a car's suspension.  The last article was the best (September
1996) as it explained how to correct different instances of understeer and
oversteer....ie. corner entry, steady state corner, and corner exit.

Try "Inside Racing Technology" by Paul Haney & Jeff Braun.  You should
find it at your local bookstore in the automotive section.  It helped me
figure out a few things about making cars handle better.

Check out the Late Night website. There's a couple of book reviews as well
as a link to a site called "The Physics of Racing" that will get you
started.

Check out http://reality.sgi.com/employees/rck/PhOR/index.htm
"Physics Of Racing", it's an overly informative series that illustrates how all
systems on a race car affect (effect?) the whole.

Hi,

I went to Barnes & Noble and found none of the above books.  I'll look
elsewhere.

The reason I ask about suspension theory is: while all the physics of
racing sites make sense they don't neatly point out what to do with a
ICR2 or NASCAR setup.  I've found two list for the sim setups.
Unfortunately one explains why to do something

        www.sequoia-dev.com/Hawaii/Features/setupguide.html

and the other just says "if this then that" whith out any reasoning.

        userwww.servuce.emory.edu/~ebusch/quickfix.html

The later seems to be more accurate.  As usual you may find it on the
net, but you never really know if it's correct.

Regards,
John

One of the problems with trying to extrapolate from a racing physics text
is that the Papyrus simulations are not entirely accurate with regard to
all the aspects that affect suspension and tire performance. For example,
every book on racing theory will tell you that increasing the load on a
tire will increase the lateral and longitudinal force generated by that
tire. The Papyrus sim models this backwards, i.e. decreasing the load on a
tire increases the force.
