GPL '72 mod?

by Kendt Eklu » Sat, 26 Jan 2002 12:39:59

Racesim Central had a teaser about an upcoming article on this mod -
then - nothing!  Anyone heard any news - does it really exist?  Is it
tied up in worries about online cheating?

Anyone?  Bueller?

It is not a mod but a separate product from Papyrus...if it does exist.

My mistake - I was under the impression from the rumours that there
was someone playing around with a 72 update in addition to Papyrus.

Hmmm - an assumption based on a rumour.  I think I wanted GPL72 to
exist a little too much!
So sad - I know Dave K. has admitted to testing high-downforce
modifications to GPL, and I bet they'd love to do it, but the a-holes
at Sierra can't see past the cash cow that is NASCAR :(.  Yeah - I
know it's just business realities - but it still *hurts* ;)...

Unless someone has access to the actual GPL source-code - I find such a
modification highly unlikely....  especially if it's going to be anywhere
remotely close to realistic...

GPL '72 mod?

There =was= a giant buzz for a few weeks, which died away when "one of us"
managed to weasel his way into the Papyrus corporate structure by phone and
actually talk to someone who said that the project, which had been proposed
and touted by Sierra/France, had been dropped. Of course, there was the
requisite period of mourning, complete with wailing and gnashing of teeth,
when that word came out. :-(

See above...

There was (and "maybe" is) a group of GPL fans working on a
patch/mod/add-on to "Classic GPL" that would modify the physics and
graphics to allow for high downforce, 1972 and beyond, F1 racing.

That word became public when someone with the patch joined a Monza pickup
race on VROC and =walked=away=from=the=field=, with literally unbelievable
cornering and straight line speeds.

I haven't heard any more about that project in several weeks.

If you really want to stay current on GPL, I recommend two forums (fora?)
besides this one:

RaceSimCentral, which used to be Legends Central, is very good:

http://forum.racesimcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=36

The RACEsim English language GPL forums are less prolific, but still
significant:

Enjoy,
Chris.
