Fairly new to computer racing...just discovered this newsgroup...have 3
questions that hopefully somebody can answer or direct me to help...any help
appreciated...

Running a P2-MMX...64 ram...Voodoo 3...Soundbalster

Games used...NA$CAR 99...EA  Sports Car GT and F1 2000...Sega Rally Ch 2

1.  F1 2000...will not recognize MS wheel...makes me use the joystick...(all my
other games use the wheel)...

2.  Sega Rally Ch. 2...locks up at various points in the game...not during
racing but before or after...

3.  When the IRS sends me my $600 in Sept I will be looking at new
computers...should I stay with Win98?  I hear bad things about Win 2000 and
XP...what about WIN-ME?

I can't help you with 1 and 2, but I've heard from my *** fanatic buddies
that XP is actually very good for ***. Whether or not that's the case
though, Win98SE is still your best bet for compatibility with games, and I
believe it's your best choice.

Depending where you get your PC, you may not have a choice - it may come
bundled with ME. WinME is fine for games as long as you turn off all the
***it wants to run (system restore, etc.). Search this newsgroup archive
for dozens of WinME-related problems and solutions.

If you install ME, get System Restore Remover Pro (just do a web search to
find it) and remove everything you can with it (system restore, pc health,
media player 7, etc).  Then you end up with an ever-so-slightly nicer
version of 98SE.  Certainly the default install of ME, without removing all
the extra ***is worse than 98SE.  Remove the ***and it's fine.

Does it see ANY axes(axis's?) of the MS wheel?  I'm going to guess that it sees
the wheel, but not the pedals.  Hold the pedals halfway down from the time you
start the game until you get to the config screen.  It should see them then.
After you set that up, then whenever you go to the track, hold down the pedals.
Yes, I know it's dumb, but that's the only way I've been able to get it to see
my TSW2mod.  If anyone has an easier way, I'm all ears...<g>

Do not waste your money on a new OS, win98 is excellent, just install all
the updates.

Keep your voodoo3 for a few months and get either a duron 1ghz or tbird
1.3ghz plus mobo plus 256megs ram.  These are incredible bargains.  Get
either the gf3 or radeon2 8500 when the next major game title appears, which
prolly won't happen for a couple months, and prices will drop by then.
Ebworld is running a pre-order $299 special right now on the Radeon2 if you
want to go that route, which is a very good deal.
