I just dl'd the '98 carsets and experienced the same. I'm sure the authors
and others who edit the files can give you a more definitive answer. Here's
what I surmise:
The carsets just change the team/driver power factor. There is apparently
another driver factor (ie, why Alesi kicks Berger butt, ditto for Schumacher
vs Irvine) that I haven't seen any of the editors access. More important, I
think if you aren't in game mode (ie, track downloaded), the times are
influenced primarily by the actual '96 event. That is, I'm willing to bet
there is something in F1RS that "fakes" these results. So, I think your best
bet is to race the events in realtime, followed by at least dl'ing the track
and running the quals in accelerated mode.
I've noted in the past that there are a number of AI modes in F1RS. I'm not
referring to the amateur/pro, but rather to the times a driver will post
depending on whether you just skip by that event (practice, quals, warmup),
whether you are in accelerated mode (in pit, or just watching a race after you
retired), or whether you are actually in real time (in pit, or on track). I
believe that if you just skip past practice/quals/whatever, the times are
influenced by what transpired in the actual '96 race. Check the two. I think
you'll find that the top three are often the same, the top 7 or so will be
likewise, with the occasional switching of a couple. The times will be
mediocre. If you instead enter that event (dl the track), the times and order
are more dependent on the car power settings (and hypothesized "driver
rating"). If you instead are in real-time, the times are even faster by a
second or more.
Even more modes? If you run a car in demonstration mode, you'll see times
that get incrementally better (a second or so) when you switch from amateur to
pro to expert. But the fastest time here doesn't compare to the times the
expert AI cars will turn in actual real-time races.
Wondering if anyone else has noticed same or has another explanation.
Sorry for the long-winded response.
