NFSSE (I know it's old, but I just got it)

I have a problem with NFSSE.  I just bought it in a multi-pack (with
Road Rash and Test Drive - Off Road).  I know that by themselves,
these games are not worth the cash, but it was cheap enough for me.

Problem:  NFS-SE says it has Win and Dos executables, but I am unable
to use the Win installer ("This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down").  Every time I try it I get this
message.  So, I think, I will run it in DOS.  Well, I have to exit to
MS-Dos mode, not run it in a window, so that is annoyance #1.  #2,
while installing, I get to the test video portion, and get two lines
of frames across the top of my screen, which look like they are in 16
colors!  When I start the game, the videos it was playing work just
fine ( EA logo and Pioneer Logo), full screen and very pretty.
However, during the game, for a winner's video, it is back to the two
lines of small frames in 16 colors!  BTW,  the music plays fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me as to how to correct any of
these problems?  They don't make it impossible to play, but I tend to
get annoyed if something doesn't work like it should!

P.S.  The gameplay is just fine!

Thanks in advance,

Dan.
