I recently purchased a set of FPS2000 speakers to go along with my Xitel
Storm Platinum sound card. I am having problems with certain .wav files,
especially in DOS games. In all of my DOS games (and some Windows games), when
a .wav file plays, I hear hiss/static in the background. It doesn't matter if
I run the program in a DOS box or in real DOS. I also hear the hiss with the
various Windows .wav files (event sounds) which come with the different
Microsoft themes.
The DOS games include:
Nascar Racing 2 - both the rendition and 3DFX executables
Nascar Racing 1999 - both the rendition and 3DFX executables
Links LS
Quake
IndyCar Racing 2
The Windows games include:
SODA Off-road Racing
I barely noticed it before, because my previous speaker set was not as
high in quality. With my old speakers, I could discern the hiss if I listened
very carefully. But with the new speakers (which are much more sensitive), it
is extremely annoying. I have upgraded to the new beta drivers from Aureal in
an attempt to correct it, with no luck. The problem seems to be centered only
with .wav files - since my MP3s and MIDI files sound fine.
I have also hooked the FPS2000 speakers up to my other computer, which
has a Turtle Beach Montego sound card. (Vortex 1) Unfortunately, I noticed the
exact same problem. I have tried everything that I can think of. (adjusting
the software vs speaker volume, reinstalling the sound card and games, etc.) I
currently have the speaker volume set at about 50% and the Windows volume at
around 65%.
Here are my computer specifications:
P2-450
128M RAM
Abit BH-6 motherboard
Hercules Thriller 3D 8M AGP video card
Pure3D II Voodoo2 SLI
Teac 32X CD-ROM
IBM 14.4G and 8.4 hard drives
Adaptec 2940W SCSI adapter
Yamaha 4260 CD-RW drive
Linksys EtherPCI II LAN card
Xitel Storm Platinum
US Robotics 56k modem
Windows 95 OSR2
I have the sound card in PCI slot #1 - which forces it to share and IRQ with the
AGP card. Unfortunately, doing that was the only way for me to get everything
working. The sound card in my second computer does not have to share an IRQ,
but it also exhibits the same problem with .wav files. I do not remember
having this problem back when I had my old Soundblaster 16 card installed.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
