Lorenzo Bandini, 21.12.35 - 10.5.67

Lorenzo Bandini died on this day in 1967 after crashing at the
chicane in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Lorenzo first drove in the 1961 season in a Cooper-Maserati,
contesting 4 grands prix, his best finish being 8th at Monza.
The following year he drove a Ferrari at 3 races, finishing
3rd at Monaco.
In 1963 Bandini drove 3 races for BRM before switching back
to Ferrari for four races (and for the rest of his career).
He achieved 5th place three times.
In 1964 came Lorenzo's first and only Grand Prix win, in
the Austrian Grand Prix at Zeltweg. Three further third places
and a fifth meant he came 4th in the Driver's Championship.
In 1965 and '66 Bandini continued to drive for Ferrari,
gaining three podium placings but no more wins, although
he posted the fastest lap at the 1966 Monaco and French
GPs (starting the latter from pole position and leading
over half the race).
Then came the fateful 1967 season. Ferrari missed the
opening race at Kyalami. In the second race at Monaco Lorenzo,
having started from the front row and led at the end of the
first lap, crashed in flames at the old high-speed chicane and
died three days later of his injuries.

In addition to his one Grand Prix win, Lorenzo also won
several World Sports Car races: the 1961 Pescara 4h, the 1963
Le Mans 24h, the 1965 Targa Florio, the 1967 Monza 1000km and
the 1967 Daytona 24h, all driving a Ferrari.

The first F1 GP that I ever watched on TV was the '67 GP de Monaco.  I'll
never forget Bandini.

Early May doesn't seem to be a good time if you are a GP
driver.  Senna expired on 1st May, Gilles on 8th May and Bandini
on 10th May.

Add Mike Spence of the Lotus team who died in practice for the Indy
500 on May 7, 1968.  This was only a few weeks after the death of Jim
Clark and Colin Chapman was so overwhelmed by the tragedies that he
had to go back to England.

In the sixties race fans had to endure 45 minutes of ice dancing for
every 15 minutes of racing shown on wide world of sports.  One
exception was the extensive coverage of the 1967 race at Monaco.  The
broadcast was of course time delayed, and I knew about Bandini's death
from the newspaper.  Despite this forewarning, I was horrified by the
accident coverage.  ABC's handling of this tragedy convinced me they
were an enemy of racing.  They ignored racing, or gave it minimal
coverage, until an awful accident could be showcased.

Thankfully, as the networks have become more involved in racing, the
handling of accidents has become more humane.  Greg Moore's accident
was not played repeatedly despite the spectacle it was.  There was more
respect shown to Greg than was given to Bandini.

After many hours at Monaco with GPL, I wonder at how any of the drivers
made it through the chicane for an entire race - I cannot. They were
Giants.

It's simple, they had to make it through or they lost their life. It is so
important to show respect to ANY racing driver, you have road racing, street
racing and oval racing, they all have their challenge, and all have their
danger.

Archie Scott-Brown and Elio de Angelis too, not to mention all the
accidents at Indy.

Even the trackside TVs didn't replay it too much.  I was at that race, and
the first thing that rushed through my head when I saw that wreck on the
Jumbotron was "If he doesn't get killed in that, he isn't going to be racing
soon, that's for sure."  They only replayed it at the track once after the
wreck.  Very well handled in my opinion, though ever since I have questioned
the need for grass there...if it was all paved he wouldn't have hit that dip
and gone flying, he likely would have either pulled it back in line or just
hit the wall with reduced force...

Just to pitch in my two cents....Death (err, Sports) Illustrated...aka
Football and Baseball Weekly...

From time to time they've run articles on F1...something I saw on
Prost, while he was still with Williams....

Anyway, they had a single picture of Senna's wrecked Williams...I am
not exaggerating, the picture they ran showed *** all over the
airbox...the shot was from the car's left side, and I thought he
impacted from the right...even if it was paint (maybe from the walls)
this was quite possibly the most nauseating F1 picture I'd ever seen.

Gotta love the American Media. Goddamn rag.

Carrol Smith has been writing for years how stupid it is to have grass at a
race track. A car sliding on pavement slows, and slows fairly fast. A car
sliding on grass might just as well be on ball bearings or ice.

Greg Moore, unfortunately, stands a fair example of what can happen.
