Any Reason to Upgrade from WIN 98?

by Larry Lindstro » Thu, 31 May 2001 00:22:35

My 1 year old IBM  drive decided to bite the big one
this weekend.

With a new drive configuration my system  recovery
tapes are  useless, so I need to reload Windows and
Solaris from scratch.

I use Windows is only for games.

Is there any reason to go with WIN ME, 2000 (which
I have in a box) or stick with 98, and upgrade to XP
later?

                                              Thanks
                                              Larry

If games is the only use you have for Windows, you'd be better off to
stick with Win98SE.  I'm not so sure XP will be a good path to follow
either, but we'll see when we get there.

I've run Win ME on both my PCs. No problems at all, but you absolutely must
turn off system restore if you want to play games.

Win 2000 is more stable than ME, but not particularly useful for *** IMO.

I use ME for GPL and the longer I play the slower the game gets. It's not a
memory
or processor or GPU problem: >512 MB, 1.4 GHz P4, and GF2. Exiting and
restarting GPL does nothing. I have to reboot to clear out whatever it is
that's getting clogged. In addition, GPL has gotten slower and slower in
general over time. My HD has plenty of space and I regularly defragment.
Don't know what it is. I only know that I used to run at 1280x1024 with
every setting at max, and now can really only run at 1024x768 with mirror
detail set to Cars & Track. I've never heard anyone complain of these
problems with 98. I'm considering downgrading to 98.

Don't use w2k for GPL if you have a Logitech Wingman FF wheel (original or
GP). There's a rather severe twitch problem that makes me crash. I have an
original Wingman FF and the newer GP version, and both do it. I've tried
everything I can think of and everything suggested at this newsgroup with no
success. Although GPL runs faster and smoother (and doesn't have the memory
limitation problem--GPL requires the replayMemoryOverride setting in 98/ME
to limit it to 256; without the override, it won't work correctly), but the
twitch problem is so irritating that I can't drive.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.  I don't
think there is any compelling reason to upgrade.

My only regret for installing Win2k, is that the Win version
of ICR2 doesn't work....but the dos one does :\
