V5 question ?

by Andre Perro » Thu, 25 May 2000 04:00:00

Does V4 or V5 is a lot better than V3 for GPL, N3, F1rs2 etc on a PIII 600e
?

Someone know when it will be available in CANADA ?

Forget the V4, but a V5 5500 AGP will definitely be better than a V3.  Of
course for GPL, the CPU is most likely the bottleneck (this only applies for
GPL), so you won't necessarily get hugely faster frame rates but you will be
able to add 2X FSAA without cost.
If you want 36 fps in GPL and your CPU is slower than 500 Mhz then I would
recommend buying a new CPU before spending money on a new video card.

The first user to post about GPL and the V5 said that the Full Screen
Anti Aliasing(fsaa) when set to the max(4x) was unplayably slow.
He didn't mention how well it ran with the 2x FSAA or how fast it ran
with the FSAA turned off.

I've been pondering the same thing. And my conclusion is that unless
you have a 1ghz cpu F1 2000 will be still to slow with FSAA on. So I'm
going to pass this generation of cards myself and buy a 1ghz cpu when
the prices are low enough.

You can order one at www.onvia.com/canada
for $410.00 CDN. They don't have it in stock so don't know when they
would ship. But, considering it is $300.00 U.S. I doubt you will find
a lower price in Canada. The V5 has been delayed for release by
another 7-14 days due to a possible flaw in the production boards.

Well, FSAA speed on a V5 should not be dependent of CPU power, only
from the graphics card itself. I.e. if you manage to get 36 fps
without FSAA, and choose a resolution where the V5 delivers enough
fillrate even with 4x FSAA enabled (800x600), you won't need a faster
CPU to get the same 36 fps with FSAA enabled. The CPU doesn't have to
do anything for FSAA, it's just the video card that has to do extra
calculations (like going from 16 to 32 bit). I can't wait to hear
first reports how GPL looks with FSAA ...

Let me rephrase that then. I won't gain any FPS increase from a V5
with FSAA over my V3 so IMO it's not worth $500.00 CDN I would have to
pay. And it depends on the game, but in some games you will lose FPS
with FSAA on. I'll spend the money on a new cpu before I will spend it
on FSAA.

OIC - that's of course true. In my case, right now I don't need extra
speed but FSAA would be very nice - though I certainly won't buy a V5
or GF2 before it drops to a reasonable price.

Hehe, right now I'm just happy with running GPL or NFS5 with a full
field at > 30 fps. Though, things might change when GP3 finally
arrives. ;-)
