Courtesy car? That's what Damon has to borrow from the garage while his
own crash damage is being repaired.... ;) (ooh, aow, sorry, I didn't
mean it!).
The safety car is like the pace car in Indy, but is seen VERY seldom. It
comes out in times of bad accidents (like Imola '94 startgrid accident
with Lamy (?)), and in times of very bad conditions during a race (Spa
'95).
It's usually discouraged, and drivers don't like it since of course tire
pressures drop and make the first lap after the restart very tricky,
even dangerous as we saw tragically with Senna. There is some opinion to
say his car dropped as the tire pressure went down following the safety
car slowly around - on the restart this caused the car to "bottom"
through Tamburello and lose control. It's not a fact, just an opinion,
and a reason why safety cars are not such a good idea.
Cheers!
John
