Got a Dell system? Want serious speed for a low cost?

Excuse me? Did I ever say the XPS-R or T is limited to 700mhz?

What I did say on the subject was this. If the mainboard does not
support the proper VRM standard, it may not supply correct voltage
to the CPU <even though the BIOS reports that it is> there-by
creating the potential for all manner of otherwise inexplicable
problems.

Make a note of it for next time. <g>

You did say that those mother boards are using the older spec
which is no guarranteed to work at the higher speeds. So you
poo-poo'd the upgrade to faster CPU's (because it didn't support
the standard). At the time (several months ago) I bought a P3-750
and it works fine. I am ready to consider the 1Ghz. The only problem
is that no flightsims or F1 racing games really require anything faster
than 750Mhz :-) Nascar 4 might but I doubt it. CFS2 and F4 or
Freespace 2 certainly doesn't... System Shock 2 and Elite Force
doesn't either. There are no flightsims of note on the horizion. So
why upgrade?

Correct.

Hey, you too :-)

Oh it does.  It's the most CPU-Hog title ever (well until the next
race/flight sim).  It will crawl at moments on a Giga+ PC  with 256mb of RAM
and a 64mb GeForce2.

Either your joking or the problem is the 64MB GeForce 2 :-)

Thanks for the great tip! The P3 1GHz I ordered arrived today. I just
plugged it in and WOW!
I used to have a P3 550 and my frame rates in N4 have doubled. I didn't
think it would be such an increase, maybe 50%, but this is great. I'm
currently using a 64MB GeForce2 (not Ultra) instead of my trusty old V3
3000, so it was obviously CPU-limited, not video-card-limited.

No problems so far - it seems to run cool enough. The extra fan mounted on
the CPU is higher-pitched and a bit noisy though. It's worth it.

For any Canadians thinking of this upgrade to their Dell T-series, I picked
up the P3 1GHz CPU from http://www.microson.com for $494 + $15
handling/shipping + taxes. It arrived exactly a week after I placed my
order.

I feel like I own a Mazda - "zoom - zoom"...
