Can't get GP4 to run! ARGGHH!

by Andrew Sahel » Mon, 08 Jul 2002 12:44:36

Very frustrated!

Having just bought GP4, I can't get it to load at all - it locks up with
nothing more than a black window, and an Error window pops up (I can't see
whats in the error window - it's lost within this black hole on my screen!)

I'm running an Athlon 1200Mhz, Riva TNT2 Ultra (old, I know), Diamond
Monster MX400 (old, I know).

A Microsoft Sidewinder wheel was installed (USB), and works well with GPL.

Loading the NOCD patches or GPxPatch didn't change anything either.

PLEASE HELP ME!

It lists TNT2 & Ultra as "fully tested and supported"

Intsalled the latest nVidia reference drivers, but still no GP4...

By the latest drivers do you mean the 29.++ drivers?   The tnt2 probably
should use a much older driver...(although back when it was around I didn't
pay attention to which drivers those were).
Several people have backed down to the 12's or something low like that with
good results.  Of course going that far back you lose dx8 compatiblity, but
your card isn't dx8 capable anyway.
Anyone with a clue about which drivers?
p.s.  does the cd ship with any drivers?

c'mon

GP4 does not need 3D accelerator card
just any old rendition / S3 card will do
it uses CPU to churn out the 3d objects

but still 1200mhz cpu should do it

Considering people are having enough trouble getting it to run decent with
that sort of CPU *and* a 3D card, I really wouldn't recommend it (assuming
it does indeed have a software mode still).

Either way, without a decent 3D card you lose all of the new graphical
dohickeys of GP4, and since that's the only new thing in GP4 there'd not
really be any point in getting it over GP3.

Errrr, you're right.

Now I feel really stupid...

BTW, GP4 is awesome! And when I learn how to drive half-way decent, I'm sure
I'll enjoy it even more!

Thanks for you're help.

Actually it's hardware rendering only now, so don't even try if you
don't have a 3d card.

And I'm in the same boat, but the weird thing is, GP4 ran fine for a
week, now I can't get it to run, it locks up my machine (although I
can alt-tab out). Reinstalled GP4, reinstalled dx8.1, no go. Haven't
mucked around with video drivers yet so that may be my answer.
