Fitting out new PC.

Hi Simmers:

My client wants me to setup his PPro as a Solaris web
server.

This is something I've never done, so I'm doing it for free.
On the up side, I get to have the PC for a couple of months.

I'M GOING TO GET TO DO MULTI-PLAYER --- WOOHOO!!!

So, I want to fit it out with equipment I'll move to my
next PC when this goes back.

I'm only interested in PCI devices, I think that is the
only slots my next PC will have.

First, what sound card do I want?

The PDPI is ISA only, and I'd like to give it a little more
time to mature, so I would like this sound card to have a
joystick port, preferably digital, and switch-offable.  The
absence of a joystick port would not be a deal breaker if the
sound card is superior to the alternatives.  I have a spare ACM.

F1RS racers with the necessary horsepower seem to be
impressed with that sim's 3D sound patch.  Their reports are so
glowing, I think this technology will spread, if it hasn't
already.  So I want the sound card to support it.  Do these
things do discrete 3D sound, with four or five channels?  Or
is this an effect that can be fully exploited with a pair of
speakers?

   I also need a video.

I'm thinking hard about the Quantum single card SLI.  I know
it's quite a bit more expensive than two single Voodoo 2 cards.
Is anybody else putting two Voodoo chip sets on a single card?

Of course, I don't want either card to be the secret Andy
Hollis "Flashing MFD" problem card.

Anything else I should be thinking of?

                                                        Thanks
                                                        Larry

Hi Laurence,

I just completed building 2 new P2-350's for my multiplayer fun room on
a LAN in my home (wwooohoooo as you said) and My design specs came from
highly reputable sources which I read at lenght.  My goal was to build the
fastest, MOST COMPATIBLE (read: no headaches) system that I could and not
waste money.  I have since built this system and it runs flawlessly......let
me expound

1. ASUS P2B motherboard as recommended by Toms hardware page...go read....
www.tomsharware.com

2.  G100 AGP 8 meg 2D only video card (80 bucks for your 2d...cheap and top
notch

3.  Any ol 12 meg voodoo2 card will do...I have the pure3d 2 by canopus cuz
i wanted the faster clock speed and the TV output feature....and I paid for
it...$339 delivered.

4.  The Turtle beach montego sound card...$99 from a mial order house called
computability....has an excellent digital game port also...and its PCI and
its A3D with 2 speakers.....it has been a pleasure to listen to and
use......

5.  I bought the P2-350 and im overclocking it completely stable without
extra cooling at 392 MHz (3.5 multiplier & 112 bus speed)

6.  As an important aside, I bought the 11.5GB Hard disk by maxtor called
their diamond max....it runs in ultra DMA mode using PIO mode 4 (mumbo jumbo
for fast as hell and still eide...not scsi...and I get 33 Mbps transfer
rates and got the damn thing for $330.

7.  Toshiba 32x cd rom that also can run in PIO mode 4.....the fastest
transfer mode....read about pio modes on toms hardware page under the hard
disk section.....

8.  Ofcourse, youll need an ATX case....and the intel autoswitching 10/100
network card that they currently make is top notch.....so is the new 3com
stuff....avoid no-name stuff for your network card choice......
