GPL: Motors keep blowing!

I'm really quite puzzled.  I am racing using auto gears yet whenever I do a
long intermediate race (BTW: The longest I have tried yet) my engine blows
at around or just after half distance. This has happened with the Ferrari,
Cooper and Eagle and at Kyalami and Monza.  I am using a joystick for
control and using the fire button for gas, I am NOT revving the engine on
the start line so it can't be that that is damaging the motor.  It happens
with the default setups aswell as some I got from the www somewhere.

Anyone else having this problem or knows how to fix it?

Regards

Chris

1st off: using a button for gas is a very bad idea ... just digital
information for what is one of the most difficult jobs of driving: gas
and even more: brake.
about your problem: do you get off the throttle when you shift? I am
sorry, but you have to ...

Like I said I am using "Auto Shifting" so there is no way I can know when it
is going to shift to get off the gas.  The engine isn't overevving anyway
when it shifts up or down.

<VENT> Last night in a Pro race at Watkins Glen I'm running third about
100 yards behind a Ferrari and he blows his motor.  Instead of pulling
off to the side, he just keeps rolling down the middle of the track.  Of
course my crash magnet Eagle ran right over him. </VENT>

Chris:

The usual culprit is not letting off the gas at the time of the shift.  If you
power shift, the engine will blow, even if it does not over rev.  When you start
lifting off the gas, you will see the engine last longer.  You should start doing
you own shifting.  You will notice that your times will improve.

Have you checked your gear ratios? Even with 'auto gear's' its your 'right
foot' that does the damage. Download the***pits that have the red line on
the rev counter, and adjust your gears to keep below it at max speed/revs
during a race.

Wow!  I don't think I've ever blown up a Ferrari or a Cooper.  With
auto-gears, your problem has got to be 5th gear.  See if making it longer
helps.  Or maybe you've got something really screwy, like 4th gear shorter
than 3rd gear.  Otherwise, its got to be a bug.

Are you revving the engine when you shift?
(If you don't lift off the gas when you shift, you WILL blow your engine)

The Auto gearchange will blow the engine eventually....no lifting between
changes.
Get into the habit of changing manually...........and LIFT OFF the loud pedal
when changing!

Try setting up the joystick's Y axis for gas and brake. This will give you
much better control, and maybe cure your problem.

Uh...WHY would you blow the engine on auto-shift?  IIRC, the engine doesn't
over-rev on auto...?

Poorly timed auto-downshifts causing over-revving?  That would be my
suspicion.

Your suspicion is very correct, that is the problem.

I don't think that the autoshift blips the throttle for you...not much
experience, since the day I got it I couldn't stand the stupid shifting
(IMO, easier to shift for yourself)....and I was also 'stupid' enough to
start out driving a Brabham from day 1 without any assists :)
