OT- ECC vs. non-ECC RAM?

by Warlock » Wed, 31 Oct 2001 22:22:45

As I put together my new system I noticed a couple of places have both
256 meg PC2100 ECC sticks of ram and 256meg PC2100 non-ECC sticks of
RAM. Since there's generally $6 - $10 difference between the two with
the non-ECC being cheaper, I was wondering what the difference was.
Anyone?

ECC stands for error checking and correction - it's generally used on
high reliability systems such as servers. I've had ECC RAM before (you
need a mobo that specifically supports it) but never noticed a
difference in reliability, Windoze was as flopsy as usual.

If you have extra money to spend, I'd suggest getting faster RAM
instead, pc2400 or something, then you can run CAS2 and get more
performance.

Boards with four DDR slots usually need ECC RAM to use all four slots.

That's the way the KG7 is.

Do you mind if you programs/computer crashes in mysterious ways, maybe
ruining files in the process? Of course, most are trained to not care
after years of running Windows, but why accept more crashes than
neccessary?

Get ECC if you can.

-Sandman, actually not sure if the ram in his box is ECC or not.

And why slow your system down by using ECC if your primary use for your PC
is games? I can see using ECC if your data is critical, otherwise it's not
worth getting because it is slower than non-ecc ram.
