Hi all, just found this useful information.
Ever had a problem getting games like N2 to network properly? Well
here's a neat solution.
I have two computers with NE2000 compat. cards, I can get N2-IPX
working fine in Dos. I have a friend who has two PC's with NE2000
cards. Only one has 16Mb though (although I presume he would be able
to get a game going too). When I took my lesser machine to my friends
we could not get N2-IPX working in Dos using our provided drivers.
Solution, we had to use Win95 which unfortuantely slows my machine
down. Bummer. :)
If only there was a way to use the universal Win95 NE2000 driver with
the 'compatibility' of Dos with N2. Well, there IS!
Reboot your machine in to pure Dos-Mode, change to the c:\windows (or
whatever) directory and type this:
net init
net start
net start workstation
By doing this you in effect start a Windows Network in Dos, which will
allow anyone who can network Dos games in '95 ok, to do so in Dos with
the advantages of the speed of DOS, which is so useful for games like
N2 and lesser machines.
Hopefully this means I'll be able to play N2-IPX from Dos while my
friend uses '95. I also hope that this means that, as long as a bunch
of people all have their cards correctly configured in '95, they can
all link up to play N2-IPX from Dos using these commands.
This is an excellent tip which I lifted out of the letters page of the
UK PC Gamer. I would credit the contributer but I can't remember his
name and I don't think he sent the letter via email, or is even a
racing sim fan.
Hope this helps out someone with a similar situation. :)
