They raced off-line, and reported results at driver-changes.
I want to see a new 24 hour race - 1 driver per team! No changing drivers
i.e. 1 person, all out for 24 hours. Now that would be endurance! On a long
road course, like Road America, or Portland...
Tom
Kinda' both, actually...The race was made up of several teams, each
with between 3 ~ 4 people. When the first driver finished his stint, he
sent the saved race to the next on his team, and so on. A copy of the
race is also sent to the person marshalling the race, so that track
positions, etc. could be kept track of.
For more info on the race, as well as an upcoming series, visit MIRacing
at: http://www.miracing.com
Mucho fun!! =)

was to test the endurance of the cars, not the drivers.

100% correct, Marc!
Most long-distance races (12+ hours) have required driver changes for
safety reasons. Events such as the Mille Miglia, although not requiring the
driver to be relieved, did stipulate a "co-driver".....probably to keep the
"driver" awake as well as navigate!

Methinks you-all been in Sim-land too long. Aren't you corn-fusing
"FIREBALL" ROBERTS with "CANNONBALL" BAKER?
And the generally accepted name is "HUPMOBILE"......
BTW, "Cannonball" Baker set records in 1928 of 14 min. 49.6 sec.in a
Franklin; and in 1932 of 13 min. 26 sec. in a Graham, for driving the
Mount Washington Carriage Road, in Gorham NH. This was when it was 7+
miles of dirt & rock, no pavement; unlike '95 when Paul Choiniere did
the same distance in 6 mins 45.22 secs in the Hyundai Rally Elantra.
Good hillclimb, cheap spectating, comes up again the weekend of June
28-29!
Saludos!

Hi Tom,
I think the reason there was a real 24hr race to begin with,
was to test the endurance of the cars, not the drivers. I
think this was started in the '20's, when US-auto makers
hired drivers to drive across the US. Not too many roads
at that time, but if memory serves I think Cannon-Ball
Roberts made the trip in less than 50hrs in a Hutmobile!!
Later, a race across the States was named in his honor
called the 'Cannon-Ball Run'. =)

Mark,
I understand your point completely - but we don't get to test car endurance
on the PC (not counting random breakdowns, of course) It might test PC
endurance, though - does anyone really know if Nascar2 or ICR2 is prone to
lockups after 20 hours of play?
Tom
Hi Tom,
But most (if not all) of similar types of racing do not have drivers
behind the wheel for too long...so, doing it in a sim wouldn't be
too realistic. I welcome you to try it though.<g>
The games don't have a problem with continuous runs...it's the
computer (as well as yourself) you have to worry about. ;)
Best Regards,
Marc
Just don't do this in Windows 95. Exit to a DOS ONLY session. In Windows
95, the replay just keeps going and going and going etc. because the
virtual address space is very large. Eventually your machine will start
thrashing giving you freeze frame type of action (=unplayable). This
occurs when racing even a short race with only 32 meg of memory. With 64
meg of actual memory you can race moderate lengths without this problem.

Hmm...what if someone creates a Lemans or a Sebring? Even though that
can't be done, it would be the most realistic. The next realistic
possible thing is the Watkins Glen 6 hours race in IMSA (i mean
SportsCar).

Hi Andrew,
Me thinks you don't read all the text...I said "I think"... ;)
Of course, this doesn't excuse my goof-up, and thank you
for the clarification, and my humble apologies to the late
Cannonball Baker.
Ooops, I goofed again!!...sorry. =P

I had forgotten about the Win95 version...However, why anyone
would want to play ICR2 in Crash95 is beyond me... ;)
Cheers!
