TOCA too sensitive with wheel ?

by ks denn » Fri, 13 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Now that I've got my joystick (wheel) sorted out, TOCA Touring Cars seems very
sensitive to steering input, even with the sensitivity set to LOW. Has anyone
else experienced this ? What are the chances of obtaining some kind of patch
or fix to correct this ? I have a Smith's Formula 1 Steering Wheel BTW.

TOCA, for those who haven't played it yet, BTW, is definitely not a realistic
simulation along the lines of GP2 or F1RS, but the graphics and actual
racing (bumps, outbraking, etc.) are great fun. More pleasant to play than GP2
(in the sense that I often end up on the verge of trashing anything in my grasp
when things aren't going so well in GP2 ;-) )

I have a Thrustmaster GP1 wheel and it is the same way.  The only way
I can drive it is by using the headcam mode.  The behind the car modes
make me overcorrect.  It was the same way with a Firebird joystick
that I had good luck with in other racing games.
I am going to build my own wheel so I can adjust how sensitive the
wheel is.  Check out Wally's site

I use a Thrustmaster GP1 with TOCA and have no problems on the medium
setting for sensitivity. I NEVER use behind the car view though as I think
this gives no sensation of actually being there or competing in a race.

You can get a patch for directinput which eliminates the wheel's dead zone
(the area either side of the centre postion where movement is ignored by
directinput) and gives you much more precise control of the car with less
wandering on the straight

Not realistic ??
Have you ever watched Uk touring cars race ?
The only bit thats missing is the 'fight with john clelland' option .

TOCA too sensitive with wheel ?

: TOCA is fine from the in-car views with my GP1, but my friend had a T2
: and that was more sensitive - we were both "weaving" down the straights.
:
: Both controllers have the same value steering pot - but the GP1 has only
: 180 degrees of lock, compared to the T2's lock of (what is it?) 270
: degrees.
:
: I haven't tried this, but try calibrating your T2 with only 180 degrees
: of lock, and see how well it works. Let me know what happens.
:
: Mind you if you're using the view from behind the car, then you will
: always weave.
:
:                 Richard.

I was wondering if the problem may actually stem from the Win95 joystick
deadzone, which makes it difficult to make SMALL corrections (such as those
needed going down a straight) due to the lag induced, and the natural
tendency to overcompensate for the deadzone.

I believe there are some programs to eliminate (adjust ?) the deadzone. Could
someone tell me where I can find them ?

Thanks

Ryan
